CCCC board extends president's contract

After a special meeting two weeks ago and three executive sessions at Tuesday night's regular Cloud County Community College Board of Trustees meeting, a three-year rolling contract was approved for president Danette Toone.
Toone's contract was extended to 2017, and included a 1 1/2-percent raise, bringing her salary to $128,830. Toone came to Cloud in 2010 from Temple College in Temple, Texas, where she was the vice president of academic and community initiatives.
The board also discussed negotiations in one of the executive sessions, but no action was taken.
In her president's report, Toone told the board the articulation agreement between Cloud and National American University is still in effect. In 2012, the college entered into an agreement with NAU to offer online bachelor's band master's degrees through the university.
Madison Toone had been the liaison between Cloud and NAU, but recently moved to North Carolina. Toone said NAU is working to fill the vacancy left by her daughter's moving away.
"Our partnership is very, very strong," Toone said. "We're still anticipating moving forward in that regard."
The president also updated the board on residents who have been staying in the Hillside Apartments.
Toone said workers with Eby Construction, who are currently working on the Brown Grand Theatre restoration project, had approached the college asking to rent rooms because they could not afford to stay in a hotel.
"We had some workers come to us to say they were going to either live in their trucks or go home every week," Toone said. "Because they were not going to stay and we had room at Hillside, we said it's better and safer for them to stay there."
The workers, who are only here from Sunday through Tuesday, are paying rent for using the facility, which is deposited in the residence life fund.
The board accepted a low bid of $37,989 from Bobcat of Salina for the purchase of a Bobcat IT4 skid steer loader for the wind energy program. Funds for the purchase will come from the 2010 Department of Energy grant funds.
Chairman Larry Henry expressed the board's appreciation to Concordia Tractor for its bid, though it was not the lowest, and for loaning vehicles to the college in the past.
A bid for $27,652 for a new 3/4-ton truck from Shawnee Mission Ford was also accepted. The truck will also be used for the wind energy program, and grant funds will pay for its purchase.
During personnel matters, the board approved the retirement of Nick Jones, instructor in art, effective June 1. Jones has been employed at the college since August 2002. The board authorized the administration to fill the vacancy.
The retirement of Sue Sutton, division dean of humanities and social sciences, was also accepted. Sutton has been an employee of the college since August 1975. Her retirement is effective June 30, and the administration will fill the vacancy.
Wonda Phillips, who has been at the college for more than 30 years, submitted a request to participate in the college's early retirement program, effective July 1. Phillips is currently the Career Center office manager, facilities scheduler and assists the Humanities Department. There are no plans to fill the vacancy.
The board approved the hire of Amanda Strait as the new associate coordinator of online services. Her hire is effective Feb. 3 at a salary of $32,000, plus benefits. Strait had been the college's grant coordinator, and the administration will fill that position.
A change of position for Bruce Graham was approved. Graham will become the director of wind energy development for the duration of the two-year wind energy grant. When the grant is completed, Graham will move back into his full-time faculty position. The two-year, grant-funded contract will be effective Dec. 1 at his current salary.
During the vice president reports, Joel Figgs, vice president for enrollment management and student services, reported that spring semester credit hours are down 6.64 percent from last year. Headcount is also down 4.2 percent.
The board also approved travel in the amount of $1,800 for Toone to attend the Higher Learning Commission's annual conference in Chicago in April.
