ANGIE ROBERTA WILLIS
Angie Roberta Willis, 91, of Jewell, Kan., passed away from this life on Oct. 6, 2012, at Mankato, Kan., where she had been a resident of the Jewell County Convalescent Hospital for the past two years. Prior to that she had made her home at the Jewell Apartments for three years.
She was born to John and Trinnie DeBey on a farm near Dispatch, Kan., May 3, 1921. Angie was united in marriage to Charles Raymond Willis Nov. 29, 1941, in Tonganoxie, Kan. They had one son, Ronald Ray, born March 8, 1943.
Angie graduated from Downs High School in 1938 and attended Kansas Wesleyan College of Salina and Emporia State University earning both her Bachelor and Master degrees. For 40 years Angie was known throughout Concordia where the couple made their home as Mrs. Willis, the "Kindergarten Teacher."
Angie and Raymond enjoyed square dancing in their younger years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Concordia most of her adult life and later transferred membership to Trinity United Methodist Church of Jewell. She was a member of the Concordia Teachers Association. Angie and Raymond were charter members of the Cloud County Community College T-Bird Athletic Booster Club and had the same seats at the T-Bird home games and at the National Junior College Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson for 40 years.
She is survived by her son, Ron and wife Karen of Jewell; grandchildren: James Willis and wife Anita of Hutchinson, Sara Willis McKissick and husband Pat of Matthews, N.C., Ward Willis and wife Nikki of Halstead, Amy Wendell and husband Jerry of Simpson, Brenda Foster of McPherson, Joy Wentling and husband Wade of McPherson; great-grandchildren: Ryan, Luke and Daniel Willis of Hutchinson, Caroline and Lilly McKissick of Matthews, N.C., Noah and Kinsey Davidson of Halstead, Nathan and Brylee Willis of Halstead, Katie Wendell of Hays, Kristopher Wendell of Beloit, Kanean Wendell of Salina, Amayi Esterl and husband Bradley of Park City, Ben Kruse and wife Shantel of McPherson, Spencer Foster of Salina, Kimberly Martin and husband Michael of Ellsworth, Erica Kramer and husband Brian of McPherson, Amber Whitehill and husband Drew of Lawrence, Josh Wentling and wife Callie of Wichita and Sam Wentling of McPherson. In addition Angie had six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, her parents, two brothers, Melvin DeBey of Downs and Bernal DeBey of Lebanon, two infants, a brother and a sister, and one granddaughter, Tammy Jane Shamburg of Beloit.
The family has requested that memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Jewell.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Jewell, Kan., with the Rev. Jim Rice officiating.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, from 1-7 p.m. with the family present 6-7 p.m. at Kleppinger Funeral Home, 409 Broadway, Jewell, Kan.
The graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia.
