Carol Jane Garlow
Carol Jane Garlow
Carol Jane Garlow, age 62, native of Enid, Okla., passed away at her home in El Cajon, Calif., Sunday, April 21, 2013, after a nearly six-year courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was the Pastor of Prayer and Intercession at Skyline Church in the San Diego, Calif., area, and wife of Senior Pastor, Dr. Jim Garlow, a Concordia native.
Carol Jane Luckert was born in Enid, Okla., August 11, 1950, to parents Richard and Vivian Luckert. By age ten she began serving as the church pianist or as organist at Westside Wesleyan Church in Enid.
Carol graduated as valedictorian from Carrier (Oklahoma) High School, where she was involved in many activities including cheerleading and being selected as the FFA Sweetheart. She continued her schooling at Oklahoma Wesleyan University and later attended the University of Oklahoma.
After marrying Jim Garlow – son of Winifred Garlow, now of La Mesa, Calif., and the late Burtis Garlow, who together farmed in the Ames community – January 30, 1971, in Enid, Okla., Jim and Carol moved to Kentucky and later New Jersey to continue their schooling. Since Jim was a member of Concordia Wesleyan Church and had served as the Youth Pastor at the Concordia Baptist Church, a wedding reception was held in their honor at the Concordia Baptist Church.
Carol graduated with a degree in classical music and pipe organ from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. An accomplished piano teacher, she received training in the Suzuki method of piano instruction at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, and taught piano for several decades, in addition to directing children’s choirs and producing children’s musicals.
Jim and Carol later moved back to Oklahoma where they became professors at their alma mater, Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla.
However, both Jim and Carol loved serving as pastors. After serving together at churches in Kentucky, New Jersey and Oklahoma, the Garlows moved to Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas, where Jim and Carol were the founding pastors of Metroplex Chapel (Church of the Nazarene), where they served for 13 years. In 1995, they moved to the San Diego, Calif., area, when Jim became Senior Pastor at Skyline Wesleyan Church and Carol became the Pastor of Prayer and Intercession.
After serving alongside her husband in ministry for 39 years, Carol was formally ordained by the Wesleyan denomination in 2010. In honor of her dedication to ministry and the church, Skyline’s new church sanctuary, which opened March 2012, featured a large stone wall in the atrium known as the “Carol Garlow Healing Wall.” The wall replicates Jerusalem’s “Wailing Wall,” a stone wall where parishioners write down their prayer requests and place them in the mortar crevices between the stones of the wall.
In 2005, Carol co-authored with her husband "God Still Heals: Answers to Your Questions about Divine Healing."
In 2009, then California State Assemblyman Joel Anderson awarded Carol Jane Luckert Garlow the 77th Assembly District “Woman of the Year” Award, in part for her being an inspiration to the community in her fight against cancer. Her passion for prayer had caused her to raise up a “Prayer Team” to pray for political leaders in the California State Senate and Assembly, and the US Congress.
Upon her passing, now California State Senator Joel Anderson adjourned the California State Senate in her honor. Likewise, California State Assemblyman Brian Jones adjourned the California State Assembly in her honor, as did Supervisor Diane Jacob at the Board of Supervisors meeting for San Diego County.
Carol is survived by her husband Jim of 42 years, their four children, Janie (Jeremy) McGarity, Joshua (Lacy) Garlow, Jacob Garlow and Josie Garlow, and five grandsons, all from the San Diego area.
In addition she is survived by her parents Richard and Vivian Luckert, now of Oklahoma City, sister Kathy (Larry) Goad of Desoto, Texas, and brother John (Mary) Luckert of Oklahoma City.
Memorial services will be Friday, May 3, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time in the auditorium at Skyline Church, La Mesa, California. It can be watched at http://live.skylinechurch.org.
