Verda Greene, age 87, Concordia, Kan., died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia. She was born on a farm in rural Wamego, Kan., on March 30, 1926, to George “Butch” and Rose (Orsborn) Knipp.
Verda graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1944. She then attended nursing school at St. Mary’s Hospital in Manhattan. She married Larry Greene on Aug. 6, 1947, in Westmoreland after he returned home from the war. Larry preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 2008. Verda was a surgical nurse and worked in various hospitals before moving to Concordia, where she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital for more than 28 years until her retirement in 1988. Verda was a member of The Baptist Church and a host of women’s groups within the Church. She also was an avid card player and member of several card clubs and enjoyed quilting and gardening.
Verda is survived by her daughters, Carol Fahring and husband Marvin of Concordia and Marcia Greene of Salina; grandson, Jason Fahring and wife Michelle of Attica; great-grandchildren, Emelia, Caleb and Addison Fahring, Attica; sister, Jeannie Krouse of Onaga; and she was a special “Kansas” Mother and Grandmother to Quentin and Christine Smith and their children, Abraham, Benjamin and Joshua Smith and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry and her parents.
It was Verda’s wishes to be cremated and memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Concordia Wesleyan Church with the Rev. David Redmond and Pastor Bob Burns officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow the services at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.
