BETTY J. KELLY
Betty J. Kelly of Pittsburg died on Feb. 21, 2014, at Via Christi Hospital.
Her family and many friends remember her as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Betty never missed an opportunity to be with her family and always was ready with an encouraging word, as well as a memorable home-cooked meal. Everyone loved her baking, and she was known to show up at events that had more pies than people.
Betty was born on Sept. 22, 1927, in Jewell County in north central Kansas. Her parents were Roy Jesse and Pearl Olson (Christensen) Emerson. She graduated from Jamestown High School and married Orlyn Kelly in Concordia, Kan., on Oct. 4, 1947. The couple moved to Pittsburg in 1960, where they were active in the Assembly of God Church.
Betty worked for Drury-Albertini Furniture (later Drury Furniture) for more than 13 years. She may be better known around southwest Kansas for her many years as an Avon representative. Many friends of the family believe her greatest accomplishment may have been raising and feeding four active boys and keeping them out of too much mischief.
Orlyn preceded Betty in death, along with her parents; sons Dennis G. Kelly and David Kelly; a brother, Roy "Bud" Emerson; and two sisters, Sylvia Lee Emerson and Darlene Spence.
She is survived by three sons: Al Kelly of Lee's Summit, Mo.; Michael O. Kelly and wife Nancy of Blue Springs, Mo.; and Marlon D. Kelly and wife Mauritis of Brandon, Fla.; two sisters, Joyce Puyer of Boulder, Colo., and Nellie Gordanier of Haysville, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous friends.
Betty's grandson, Brandon Kelly, will conduct a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, in Norway, Kan. Family and friends are invited to meet at the cemetery.
Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences and messages to the family may be left at www.brennermortuary.com.
