Blues headed to state tournament

MARYSVILLE — Marysville, the only team to beat the Concordia Blues this season, was unable to repeat that feat in two attempts in the American Legion Baseball Class AA Zone Tournament.
One night after shutting out Marysville 5-0 in the semifinals, the Blues posted an 11-4 victory in the championship game on Tuesday night.
Concordia (22-1) earns a trip to the state tournament which begins next Wednesday night in Pratt.
Marysville had beaten the Blues 6-4 in the second game of a doubleheader back on July 7.
Concordia had won the other four meetings.
After losing to the Blues on Monday night, Marysville downed Linn in the double elimination tournament on Tuesday night to set up a rematch.
Marysville needed two wins over Concordia to capture the tournament title.
The Blues scored five runs in the top of the first inning, and would never trail.
Bowe Behymer got things started with a single, and stole second.
With one out, Trevor Nordell singled to drive in Behymer.
Skyler Hittle singled and scored on a double by Jordan Mehl.
Trey Dubbert doubled to drive in Mehl.
Connor Eilert followed that up with a double that got Dubbert home.
Will Strommen was hit by a pitch and Tanner Gilbert reached base on an error to load the bases.
Behymer was hit by a pitch to force home a run.
Concordia tacked on two runs in the top of the second inning to make it a 7-0 game.
Hittle and Mehl each singled and scored on errors.
Marysville made it 7-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Garrett Crome singled and scored on a fly ball by Aaren Schmelzle.
Trevor Moser singled and scored on a passed ball.
Concordia picked up a run in the fourth inning when Mehl walked with two out and scored on a single by Eilert.
Marysville pushed across two runs in the fifth inning.
Crome singled and scored, and Garrett Eck reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored.
Strommen doubled home Mehl in the top of the sixth inning, and Concordia had a 9-4 advantage.
The Blues added two runs in the seventh inning.
Behymer led off with a single. He stole second and scored on a single by Nathan Gieber.
Nordell got aboard on a fielder’s choice and Dubbert drove him in.
Skyler Hittle pitched all seven innings to get the win. He gave up four runs on seven hits, struck out eight and walked six.
Cody Ketter took the loss for Marysville.
Hittle had three hits and scored two runs for the Blues.
Mehl had two hits and scored four runs.
Dubbert and Eilert had two hits and drove in two runs each.
Behymer had two hits and scored two runs.
