OVERLAND PARK — Cloud County Community College freshman George Gathuru captured the individual Region 6 men’s cross country championship.
Gathuru turned in a course record time of 25:06.90 to win the race by nearly 10 seconds on Saturday. He becomes Cloud County’s 11th individual champion, the most of any team in the region, and earned all-region honors.
Darragh Rennicks, Cowley Community College, finished second in 26:16.60.
Cloud County placed eighth as a team in the meet with 229 points.
Colby won the men’s title with 44 points. Allen County was second with 67 and Garden City was third with 98.
The Cloud County women finished ninth in the meet with 210 points.
Johnson County won the women’s championship with 66 points. Allen County was second with 69 and Highland was third with 114.
Sanjay Pantry crossed in 42nd place for the Cloud County men with a time of 27:36.70.
Jimmy Phitts Rodriguez finished 59th in 28:18.00.
Desi Thomas was 69th for the Thunderbirds in 28:50.70.
Phillip Alcorn ran 29:40.10.
The T-Birds had David Gregory place 104th in 31:575.30. Zach Earhart was 105th in 32:05.40 and Ronnin Oquin was 110th in 33:05.60.
The Cloud County women were led by Vanessa Resh. She ran 20:03.70 to finish 16th.
Kaitlyn Orr was 33rd with a time of 21:08.50.
Page Reed, a freshman from Concordia, placed 45th in 21:31.90.
Roxanne Tyrell finished 55th for the T-Birds with a time of 22:18.90.
Alani Dodd placed 75th in 23:49.20, and Kendra Alcorn was 82nd in 26:29.90.
Concordia High School graduate Ashlyn Lambert, a freshman at Hutchinson Community College, ran 19:52.00 to place 12th.
