There were no public comments during a 15-minute budget hearing for Cloud County Community College Tuesday evening, and the board of trustees approved the 2013-2014 budget.
The operational mill levy will remain the same as in 2013 at 25.718, and the capital outlay levy will increase to 3.950. That represents an overall increase in the mill levy from 28.989 in 2013 to 29.669 for the coming year.
At last month's regular board of trustees meeting, Bob Maxson, vice president for administrative services, said the increase in the capital levy is necessary to continue to build reserves for capital improvements. The most immediate need, he said, is the replacement of the roof at the Concordia campus, and future projects include parking and additional facility improvements.
Because of an increase in assessed valuation, the total dollar amount requested by the College will increase by $186,411, with $114,896 going toward operations and $71,514 to capital improvement funds. The actual mill levy rate, Maxson said, is the third lowest for the College in the last nine years, and is only the second increase in requested funds since 2005-2006.
In personnel matters, the board approved the hire of Kadie Kutschka for the position of admissions counselor. A 2013 graduate of Kansas State University, Kutschka will begin her duties on Aug. 13 at a 12-month salary of $29,000 plus benefits.
Laura Burgess was also hired as an admissions counselor/military liaison at the Geary County campus at a salary of $29,000 plus benefits.
At the recommendation of Chris Wilson, director of human resources, the board approved abolishing the position of TRiO academic specialist. Due to impending federal funding cuts, Wilson said, there will not be adequate funding for the position. Vandy Lund, the current TRiO academic specialist, will receive 30-days notice of the abolishment of her position.
