A proposal for a tuition increase was tabled by the Cloud County Community College board of trustees Tuesday night.
In a memo to the board, President Danette Toone and Bob Maxson, vice president for administrative services, recommended the board approve a $1 per credit hour increase in tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year for all Cloud County students, and a $2 increase for non-Cloud County residents.
Toone and Maxson also recommended a dollar increase in registration and technology fees, a $3 Geary County facility fee, and changing the online fee from $75 per class to $25 per credit hour.
If approved, the increases would generate approximately $118,000 in new revenue for college operations, $38,000 for ongoing technology purchases and updates, and an additional $23,600 for lease payments at Geary County. The Geary County increase would bring that campus's facility fees up to $10 per credit hour, which was the plan when the science building was built.
At the recommendation of Toone, the board tabled the increase until after it can be discussed at a budget study session on April 3.
The board approved a professional services agreement with Jarred, Gilmore and Phillips for the college and foundation audits for 2014 through 2018.
Maxson said the firm has done the college's audit for the past 10 years. In 2013, the fee for both audits was $18,400. The average for Kansas community colleges, Maxson said, is $38,800. The fees for coming years are: 2014, $18,500; 2015, $18,900; 2016, $19,400; 2017, $19,900; and 2018, $20,400.
In other financial matters, the board approved several bids for the blade repair program of the wind energy technology department.
The board authorized the purchases of a composite tensile tester for $42,873 and a compression tester system for $25,881, both from Kuka Sales Group, Parker, Colo. Two downdraft tables were purchased from Air Cleaning Specialists, Fenton, Mo., for $13,750. A bid of $19,000 from Brisk Heat, Columbus, Ohio, for a heated vacuum table was accepted.
All funds for the purchases will come from the 2010 Department of Energy grant.
In personnel matters, the board approved renewing contracts for head men's basketball coach Chad Eshbaugh, assistant men's coach Lance Carter, and assistant women's coach Brady Jasper.
Erin Thornburgh was hired as a new agronomy instructor at a salary of $35,245 plus benefits. Thornburgh will graduate with a masters of agronomy degree from Kansas State University in May 2014, and will begin her teaching duties on Aug. 11.
Gayle Mahin was hired as the new TRiO student support services director at a salary of $38,000 plus benefits. Mahin received a master's of social work degree from the University of Kansas in 2010, and has been a social worker in the Grand Island, Neb., public school system.
With the hire of Amy Lange as the new vice president of administrative services earlier this month, the board accepted the retirement of Maxson, effective April 30. Maxson has been employed at the college since 2006, and will be retiring to return to his home state of Iowa. Toone said a reception will be held prior to the April board meeting.
The board accepted the resignation of Laura MacLafferty as admissions counselor/military liaison on the Geary County campus. MacLafferty has been an employee since 2012, and her resignation will be effective April 3. The board authorized the administration to fill the position.
No action was taken after a 10-minute executive session to discuss negotiations.
