HOISINGTON — Four Concordia wrestlers recorded second-place finishes in the Hoisington Cardinal Corner Classic on Friday.
Cole Larsen (113), Blaze Payeur (145), Jared Knapp (152) and Kyle Marks (220) placed second in the tournament for Concordia.
The Panthers finished fourth as a team with 101 points.
Great Bend captured the team title with 245.5 points. Wichita North was second with 154.5 and Hoisington was third with 137.5.
Concordia had Gage Canfield finish third in the 132-pound class.
Tracer Workman (138), Baley Kindel (170) and Izaiah Grogan (182) placed fourth for the Panthers.
“I am extremely proud of the way these young men responded from a disappointing loss one night before. They came out and competed hard, and continued to work at improving. These wrestlers show a lot of heart and determination, never giving up and battling until the very end,” Concordia coach Kevin Brown said, “We are looking forward to getting a week of rest after 18 matches for many of these guys in three weeks. Then we will have a couple of weeks of practice to focus on our technique, and continue to improve for the second half of the season.”
Larsen won all three matches in his pool. He defeated Kody Lang, Hoisington, 9-3 and Marcus Nolde, Larned 1-0, and pinned Derrek Berg, Cimarron.
Advancing to the semifinals, Larsen beat Aiden Baxley, Lakin, 7-5 before losing by fall to Ryan Desiauiers, Great Bend, in the championship match.
Payeur had a bye in the first round of his pool. He pinned his next two opponents.
In the semifinals, Payeur pinned Kaleb Beard, Wichita North. He lost a 9-2 decision to Zack Schridde, Great Bend, in the finals.
Knapp went 3-1 in the round-robin bracket. He pinned Hunter Hanzlick, Hoisington; Colton Acton, Cimarron; and Jesus Correa, Wichita North; and lost by fall to Kade Sander, Great Bend.
Marks was given a bye in the first round of Pool A. He pinned Charlie Coleman, Cimarron, in 16 seconds and Seth Hutchins, Larned, in 1:07.
After pinning Warren Flores, Wichita North, in the semifinals, Marks lost 4-1 to Kagan Blackwell, Hoisington, in the championship match.
Canfield went 3-2 on his way to a third-place finish. He pinned Jared Medina, Holcolmb and Nathan Miller-Ayala, Wichita North, and lost 6-3 to Cody Liles, Great Bend, in his pool.
Brandon Ball, Hoisington, defeated Canfield in the semifinals, he then pinned Dalton Barker, Larned, in the third-place match.
Workman went 1-3 to place fourth. He pinned Jonathan Preito, Holcomb, and lost by fall to Cody Lytle, Great Bend; and Roberto Lopez, Wichita North; and was beaten 9-1 by Johnathan Ball, Hoisington.
Kindel beat Wyatt Davis, Larned, 4-2, and received a bye in his pool. He lost by fall to Joe Lindeberger, Great Bend.
Austin McHenry, Hoisington, pinned Kindel in the semifinals. He lost by fall to Taylor Crumley, Wichita North, in the third-place match.
Grogan was 1-3 in placing fourth. He pinned Zeke Engler, Holcomb; and lost by fall to Justin Tate, Lakin; Sam Witte, Great Bend; and Jeremiah Cesena, Wichita North.
Gavin Shuler was 0-4 in the 106-pound class for Concordia.
Logan Higbee, 160-, was 1-4.
Zak Romo went 1-4 in the 285-pound class for the Panthers.
