Concordia cruises past Pike Valley, 82-35

Playing well against a team it had overmatched, Concordia coasted to a comfortable 82-35 victory over Pike Valley Tuesday night in the Concordia Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.
Concordia shot 56 percent (29 of 52) from the field and 79 percent (19 of 24) from the free throw line in the game, and had 22 assists on the 29 made field goals.
Scoring the first eight points, Concordia never trailed in the game, and continued to pile up the points throughout.
“That is the goal when you play a team that you have overmatched, play up to your potential, and I thought we did,” Concordia coach Michael Roe said. “I thought we pushed the ball well. Defensively, we pressured them and forced some turnovers, and got some points off of those turnovers.”
Concordia (10-4) opened the game with a layup by Grant Holmes and then consecutive three-point baskets by Cooper Holmes and Grant Holmes to go up 8-0.
Grant Holmes hit 9 of 15 field goal attempts and two of four free throws in scoring 23 points. He also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Cooper Holmes chipped in 22 points. He was 7 of 14 from the floor and seven of seven from the line, and had five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Cade Huncovsky scored the first two points for Pike Valley nearly three minutes in.
Consecutive layups by Alan Garcia and a basket on a fast break by Grant Holmes extended Concordia’s lead to 14-2.
Garcia finished with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Pike Valley (6-7) got as close as 10 points.
It was a 16-6 game when Concordia scored five straight points to go up 21-6.
Huncovsky, who led Pike Valley with 16 points, scored as time ran out in the first quarter to make it 21-8.
Opening the second period with a 7-2 spurt, Concordia extended the lead to 28-10.
It was 35-16 when Concordia scored eight points in 1:06 to open up a 43-16 cushion.
Concordia led 45-20 at halftime.
“It was nice to see us continue to build the lead, and play consistent for 32 minutes,” Roe said.
Concordia was leading 49-24 in the third quarter when Cooper Holmes completed a three-point play and Kaleb Pounds made two free throws.
Robert Cox knocked down a three for Pike Valley.
Back-to-back baskets by Cooper Holmes and Grant Holmes made it 58-27.
Huncovsky hit a jumper for Pike Valley.
A three-point basket by Joshua Pounds started an 11-0 Concordia run over the final 2:10 of the third period, and it was a 69-29 game.
Concordia outscored Pike Valley 13-6 in the fourth quarter with a running clock.
Nine Concordia players scored in the game.
“When we went to our bench, our bench provided good minutes also,” Roe said.
Gabe Bergmann scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds for Concordia.
Joshua Pounds finished the game with six points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
Quinton Isaacson scored 11 points for Pike Valley.
Concordia will host Holton on Saturday night.
Holton is currently 6-9 following a 53-48 loss to Horton Tuesday night.
“Holton is a good team. They are very athletic. They play hard,” Roe said. “They don’t have any one player who really stands out. Everybody contributes.”
