PRATT — Shut out on six hits, the Concordia Blues suffered a 7-0 loss to defending champion Iola in the second round of the American Legion Baseball Class AA State Tournament Thursday night.
Nathan Whitcomb pitched all seven innings for Iola to pick up the win. He gave up six hits, struck out six and walked two.
Concordia drops into the losers’ bracket, and was scheduled to play Rock City this morning in an elimination game.
Rock City, a 1-0 loser to Ellis in the opening round, beat Pratt, 10-2.
Sabetha slipped past Ellis 10-9, and will play Iola tonight with the winner advancing to the championship game.
In the other losers’ bracket game on Thursday, Hays-TMP eliminated Wellington, 6-5.
Concordia had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the first inning.
Bowe Behymer reached base on an error and Jordan Mehl singled.
Behymer was forced out at third base on a ground ball by Nathan Gieber.
Whitcomb then struck out two to end the inning.
Connor Eilert singled with one out in the second inning and stole second, but was left stranded at third base.
Concordia got a single by Behymer and a walk by Gieber in the third inning, but was unable to score.
Iola broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth.
Trent Latta doubled and scored on an error.
Nordell singled leading off the bottom of the fourth inning, but Whitcomb retired three straight.
The Blues left another baserunner stranded in the top of the fifth inning.
Ryan Perkins led off with a double. A fly ball, a pop out and a ground ball ended the threat.
Iola stretched the lead to 7-0 with six runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Latta got things started with a single.
With one out, Derrick Weir singled home a run.
Jarred Latta walked, and Braden Larsen drove in a run with a single.
Jarred Latta scored on an error.
Aaron Barclay walked, and consecutive singles loaded the bases.
Trent Latta drew a walk to force home a run.
Concordia went scoreless in the seventh inning.
Gieber and Braden Johnson did the pitching for the Blues.
Nordell had two hits for Concordia.
