I recently learned of some funding administered by the Kansas Department of Transportation, called Safe Routes to School. It apparently pays for, among other things, sidewalk construction! Who knew?
I find this extremely interesting. As I drive 11th Street three or four times each week, about 3:30 every afternoon, I have seen groups of youngsters, mostly boys, walking east in the street because there is no sidewalk! In fact, from the intersection of Highway 81 and 11th Street as far east as one can go, there is no sidewalk!
Numbers of students walking this route is something I've not seen before this fall, probably because fifth and sixth graders are now attending classes in the Junior-Senior High building.
We have a sidewalk from 6th Street south to the Airport Park, and thankfully there are few kids living at the airport park. But there are a lot of kids who do live east of Highway 81 and they cross the highway where there is a traffic light. They have been well taught, they walk on the left side of the street, facing oncoming traffic. They are well behaved and all of them cute, but there is a tremendous amount of traffic going east and west and not a lot of walking room. Of course there is a lot of traffic! The elementary school is located at the far east end of this very same street. Safe Routes to School . . . we need this in Concordia!
