MAXINE F. SHUNN
Maxine F. Shunn, 92, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Mount Joseph Senior Village, Concordia. She was born Aug. 20, 1917, in Clyde to Charles H. and Carrie V. Lewellen Hose.
She graduated from Concordia High School and married Herman J. “Dutch” Shunn on Nov. 6, 1938, in O’Neill, Neb. They worked in the aviation industry during the World War II era In Wichita. After the war, they returned home to Concordia, where Maxine was a well-known seamstress and drapery maker.
She was elected Cloud County treasurer in 1960 and served for 22 years. In addition, she was the longtime chairman of the election board and was noted for her success in voter registrations by then-Gov. John Carlin. She was a well-known independent tax preparer for many years. She was an avid card player and loved to play with any friends or family.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlene J. Garzillo of Lawrence; son, Marvin L. (Barbara) Shunn of Concordia; three grandchildren, Charles Garzillo of Baldwin; Brandi L. Shunn of Pendleton, Ore.; and Joseph M. (Debbie) Goodwin of Belton, Mo.; three stepchildren, Lori Van Houtan (Lloyd) of Gardner; Kena Drinkwater of Stilwell and Lee Dunlap of Wamego; 11 great-grandchildren, Charlie Marie and fiancé, Nathan Cooper; Mary Beth and Kasey Jo Garzillo of Baldwin; Chris White of Kansas City; Jordan Van Houtan, USAF of San Antonio; Cassidy Van Houtan of gardner, Sabre and Brandon Dunlap of Hickman, Neb., and Abby and Dylan Drinkwater of Stilwell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman J. “Dutch” Shunn; parents, Charles and Carrie Lewellen Hose; son, Ivan Jerome Shunn; and brothers, Ivel and Valora Hose; and daughter-in-law, Doris Shunn.
Funeral service was at 2 p.m., today, Monday, July 26, at First Christian Church, Concordia, with Pastor John States officiating. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church.
