Panthers pull away from Irish

Finishing up in the second half what they started late in the first, the Concordia Panthers pulled away to a 66-43 North Central Kansas League win over Chapman Friday night in the Concordia Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.
Tied with Chapman at 18-18 midway through the second quarter, the Panthers went on a 14-4 run to make it a 32-22 game at halftime.
Concordia outscored the Irish 12-4 in the first 5:45 of the third period to open up a 44-26 advantage.
Chapman would get no closer than 16 points after that as the Panthers improved to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in League play.
“We went on a run. We got some stops defensively. Any time you get stops defensively and can convert on the offensive end, you distance yourself from a team,” Concordia coach Michael Roe said.
Chapman, 5-12 overall and 2-6 in the NCKL,  got out to a 7-4 lead in the game.
Freshman Cooper Holmes knocked down a pair of three-point shots as Concordia went up 10-9.
Holmes scored 25 points in the game. He was 11 of 14 from the field, including two of four from three-point range, and hit his only free throw.
“He shot the ball very well. He took good shots,” Roe said of Holmes, “He is a very hard player to guard when he can step out and hit two threes, and then take someone to the basket.”
The two teams traded baskets through the first four minutes of the second period, and it was an 18-18 game.
A three-point shot by Alan Garcia put Concordia on top to stay, 21-18.
Logan Lehmkuhl scored for Chapman.
A three-point shot by Kaleb Pounds and a basket by Holmes made it a 26-20 game.
Tyler Harris hit two free throws for Chapman.
Pounds got a steal and a layup, Gabe Bergmann scored on a layup and Joshua Pounds finished on a drive in the final seconds of the first half to extend Concordia’s lead to 32-22.
Kaleb Pounds came off the bench to score nine points.
Chapman’s Tyler Harris scored the first two points of the second half.
Concordia answered on a drive by Joshua Pounds.
Zach Heiman hit from 15 feet, and Chapman trailed 34-26.
The Panthers then had four different players score during a 10-0 spurt that made it a 44-26 game.
“We started getting turnovers and got out and ran,” Roe said.
Concordia would not score over the final 2:15 of the third quarter, but still had a 44-28 lead.
Grant Holmes got a steal and a layup 10 seconds into the final period to put the Panthers up 46-28. The junior scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds. He also had three steals.
Heiman answered with a three-point shot, but five straight points by Cooper Holmes stretched the lead to 20 points, 51-31, and the Panthers were on their way to sweeping the regular season series with the Irish.
Concordia had eight players score in the game.
Bergmann finished with six points and six rebounds.
Joshua Pounds added six points, three assists and three steals.
The Panthers made 25 of 44 field goal attempts for 57 percent and 12 of 15 free throws for 80 percent.
Heiman and Lehmkuhl scored 13 points each for Chapman.
Concordia plays at Phillipsburg on Tuesday night, and returns home to host Wamego in a League game on Friday night.
Phillipsburg is 16-0 and ranked sixth in Class 3A.
“Phillipsburg is a very good team, very athletic. They will get out and push the ball,” Roe said, “They are a very solid team that we are going to have to play well against.”
