Panthers romp past Bulldogs in league matchup

Taking care of business on both ends of the floor, the Concordia Panthers rolled to a 63-28 North Central Kansas League victory over Marysville Tuesday night in the Concordia Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.
Concordia, now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, gave up 10 points in the first 5:30 of the game, and just 18 points the rest of the way.
The Panthers got 43 points combined from Cooper Holmes and Grant Holmes.
Cooper Holmes scored 25 points for the second straight game. The sophomore was 9 of 15 from the field and six of six from the free throw line and also had six rebounds and four steals.
Grant Holmes, a senior, added 18 points. He was 7 of 14 from the floor and four of six from the line and had four rebounds and four steals.
"You never know what is going to happen in a league game. It is going to be very competitive. You hope you can execute defensively and you hope you can execute offensively, and I thought we did that tonight," Concordia coach Michael Roe said.
Concordia did struggle to stop Marysville early, and trailed 10-9 with 2:30 to play in the first quarter.
"We asked our defensive players to do some different things," Roe said.
Cooper Holmes grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, Grant Holmes made two layups and Kaleb Pounds got a steal and layup to put the Panthers on top to stay, 17-10.
A basket by Jacob Nelsen 52 seconds into the second quarter got Marysville within five points, 17-12.
The Bulldogs, now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the league, managed just three points over the final 7:08 of the first half.
Cooper Holmes scored seven points during a 9-0 Concordia spurt that pushed the lead to 26-12.
"He (Holmes) does a nice job of getting to the rim. When teams do stop him, he does a nice job of kicking out," Roe said, "I thought we did a good job of finding other kids quality shots."
Abel Cisneroz knocked down a three-point shot for Marysville to make it 26-15.
Concordia got a jumper by Cooper Holmes, four straight points by Ian Nordell and a three by Gilberth Garcia to open up a 35-15 halftime advantage.

Concordia opened the final period with an 11-1 spurt to open up a 58-27 lead.
With a running clock over the final five minutes, the Panthers tacked on four points to one point for the Bulldogs.
"I thought we did everything we wanted to do," Roe said, "I thought defensively we took a big step tonight in how we want to play."
