PAUL A. JOHNSON
Paul A. Johnson was born on Oct. 10, 1922, on a farm southwest of Concordia, Kan., to Carl and Edith (Nelson) Johnson. He passed from this life on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Sunset Nursing Home, Concordia, Kan., at the age of 87.
He graduated from Concordia High School and then attended school at Ft. Hays State. Paul married Faith Ward on July 23, 1944, at The Baptist Church in Concordia. She preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 2003. During WWII, Paul served in the U.S. Navy as the Commanding Officer of the minesweeper, the USS Positive, in the Middle East and Caribbean Seas. Upon returning from the Navy, he graduated from Kansas State University with degrees in civil engineering and math. Paul began his engineering career as a county engineer for several Kansas counties. He then became a partner in Reece-Johnson Construction, formerly known as Reece, Harwood and Moe Construction Co. Later, Paul became partners with Ralph Campbell, and they started Campbell and Johnson Engineers. Paul was a member of The Baptist Church where he was very active and served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and in many other ways. Paul served on the General and Executive Board of the Sunset Nursing Home for a number of years. Paul was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Paul is survived by his sons: Alan Johnson and wife Ruth of Clay Center, Kan., Eric Johnson and wife Carole of Concordia, Kan., and Kenneth Johnson and wife Peggy of Concordia, Kan.; a daughter, Winifred Dewey and husband Keith of Hudson, Iowa; sisters: Mabel Ostrom of Concordia, Kan., and Pearl Ganstrom and husband Gene of Concordia, Kan.; brothers, Carl Johnson Jr. and wife Therese of Clay Center, Neb., and Earl Johnson and wife, Goldie of Junction City, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faith; parents and grandson, Karl Dewey.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at The Baptist Church in Concordia, Kan., with Pastor David Fabarez and Dr. Warren S. Freeborn Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. The family suggest memorials to the Sunset Home or The Gideons International.
