The POW Camp Concordia Preservation Society discussed plans for repair and remodeling at the T-9 Building at its Monday evening meeting at the Museum Annex.
Paul Rimovsky reported that the building had some small leaks on the south end over the office area. This means that when the office is remodeled the area above it will have to be covered with plastic until the roof is fixed.
Some of the things that Rimovsky would like to get done this year are remove the sliding door on the south end, remove the old electrical wiring on the south end and install a new overhead door on the west side. He has checked on prices of overhead doors and will do some more checking. Remodeling the office area will mean taking out the ceiling, installing new stringers, putting plywood on the stringers, installing a new ceiling and putting in lights and electrical outlets. Members approved having Rimovsky purchase supplies to repair the ceiling and purchase an overhead door.
Work days were scheduled for April 19 and 20 to work on the office and overhead door.
Rimovsky also reported that the roof is leaking in the warehouse area. He recommended stripping the roof down to the stringers, putting the plywood back on and applying Conklin. This would not only solve the leak problem but also take about half the weight of the roof off of the stringers. The job could be done a section at a time. It would take a lot of time but would solve two problems. After some discussion, Rimovsky said he will check on the availability of scaffolding, safety harnesses and prices.
Sue Sutton gave an update on the Smithsonian Exhibit, The Way We Worked. So far, they have had more than a thousand visitors and 300 schoolchildren.
Lowell May said he checked on dog tag machines. A manual machine costs $700 and an electric one costs $10,000. He also checked on used machines and the cheapest is about $3,500. He will check with a person who has one and see what he charges to take the machine to events.
Next meeting will be at 7 p.m., April 8, at the Museum Annex. All members and interested persons are invited to attend.
