Sister Leah Smith died Feb. 21, 2013, at Mt. Joseph Senior Village in Concordia, Kan. She was 78 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 61 years.
She was born in Junction City, Kan., on Feb. 13, 1935, to Walter and Elnora Farmer Smith, the sixth of 10 children, and was baptized Leah Mae. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, Kan., on Sept. 8, 1950. On March 19, 1951, Leah received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Mary Hubertine. Later she returned to her baptismal name, Leah. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1952, and final vows on Feb. 14, 1956.
In 1953 Sister Leah began her service to the community as a teacher in Concordia, Tipton and Salina, Kan.; Chicago, Ill.; Silver City, N.M.; Gladstone, Mich.; Lake Linden, Mich.; and Grand Island, Neb. Sister Leah received a certificate in International Graphoanalysis  in 1967. In 1970 she received a B.A. in History from Marymount College in Salina. After leaving the classroom in 1975, Sister Leah served as receptionist at the Motherhouse and taught handwriting analysis. In 1980 she worked in the physical therapy department at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia, Kan., until her retirement in 2009.
Sister Leah was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters. She is survived by two sisters, Laura Smith and Nona Lindsey (Gil Mendoza).
A Bible Vigil Service will be held Feb. 26, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Anna Marie Broxterman as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Feb. 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
