CCCC board appoints Leite to VP position

The appointment of Dr. Pedro Leite to the newly created position of vice president for academic affairs and student success, effective June 1, was among the personnel moves included in the consent agenda approved by the Cloud County Community College board of trustees during its regular meeting on Tuesday night.
Leite, who had served as the interim vice president for student affairs since September 2018, was appointed to the full-time position back in April.
A college restructure for organizational realignment announced by president Dr. Adrian Douglas included combining the duties of the vice president for academic affairs and the vice president for student affairs into the vice president for academic affairs and student success position. That reduces the number of vice presidents from three to two.
Leite, who has a bachelor of administration degree from Catholic University, Campinas, Brazil, a masters of science in management degree and a masters of management information systems degree from Friends University and a higher education administration and community college teaching degree from Pittsburg State University, came to Cloud County from Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kan. He was vice president of academic affairs and students affairs and dean of the college from November 2015-July 2018.
Prior to going to Donnelly College, Leite served as the vice president of instruction and then the vice president of instruction/chief academic officer at Salina Area Technical college.
The other personnel moves included in the consent agenda that were improved included:
Appointments of Britni Tremblay as director of enrollment management, Cassie Wurtz as registrar, Kim Smith as instructor in nursing, Josiah White as assistant women's basketball coach, Stephanie Litchenauer as admissions counselor and Dr. Clayton Dunaway as instructor in music.
A request to participate in the early retirement program, effective June 30, from Janet Eubanks, director of auxiliary services, was also included in the consent agenda approved.
Eubanks has worked at the college for 21 years.
Also under the consent agenda, the board approved the appointment of Ferrell Law Firm, LLC to be retained for legal service for the college in the amount of $7,500, including hourly services and reimbursement expenses as needed, and the contract renewal for administrative personnel for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The board met in five separate executive sessions, totaling andhour and 10 minutes during the meeting.
There was no vote by the board following the executive sessions on the action item included in the agenda for contract renewal of the president.
The board approved accepting the bid of $211,500 from Harbin Construction, LLC for the remodeling of the athletic training/locker rooms of approximately 2,750 square feet.
Included in the remodeling will be moving the training room into the visitors locker room, converting the training room in the visitors locker room and converting a storage room into another small locker room for officials.
The college received two bids for the project from Harbin Construction and from Cary J. Stupka Construction. The low bid was accepted and the project will be paid for out of the capital outlay fund.
Authorizing the president to request not more than $85,000 from the Cloud County Community College Foundation for the scholarship program was approved by the board.
The board approved accepting a WIOA Youth Services Grant from Heartland Works in the amount of $90,088 to benefit the Geary County Campus and ABE in Junction City and Clay Center.
The overall purpose of the grant is to help students gain the skills needed for employment by obtaining related training (CDL, CNA, etc.).
A special board meeting to discuss the budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year was scheduled for June 12 at 5 p.m.
Cloud County Health Center administrator David Garnas gave a presentation to the board on what is happening at the hospital.
Garnas said a master facility plan was launched in December 2018 to take a strategic look at the existing building and building challenges.
Garnas said a report was presented to the community in May with the direction to strike to build a new facility which would be located on College Drive near the college.
Cost estimates and financing proposals for the new facility will be released no later than August ,according to Garnas.
During the president's message, Douglas announced the resignations of admissions counselor Tammy-Thompson-Gibbs, assistant men's basketball coach Todd Johnston and assistant wrestling coach Derek Koehn and the retirement of MaryLou Channel.
