County approves grant funds for Taco Grande

One of two grant applications considered by the Get in the Cloud grant committee was approved by the Cloud County board of commissioners during its regular meeting on Monday.
The commission approved awarding $25,000 in Get in the Cloud funds to Chad and Malinda Sallman, Brock Sallman and Dena and Loren Miller, who are joining forces to reopen Taco Grande at 1421 East Sixth Street in Concordia.
Taco Grande first opened in Concordia in 1975. It closed down when the franchise folded in the 1990s.
A group of owners from Hays purchased the franchise and original recipes.
Concordia will be the first new store under that franchise.
The owners of the Concordia store plan to employ up to 15 part-time people along with a manager.
Plans are for the restaurant to be operational in the spring of 2019.
Grant funding was requested for interior and exterior permanent renovations to bring the building back to operational status.
A total of $60,000 was requested from the Get in the Cloud grant committee for the September slate selection.
The grant committee was awarded $140,000 this year from the Meridian Way Wind Farm funds. The committee awarded $25,000 this cycle, leaving $24,550 for the next round of grants.
CloudCorp, which administers the Get in the Cloud program, will accept grant application any time between now and April, 2019 and will convene the grant committee on an as-needed basis.
The Get in the Cloud grant, established in 2014 by CloudCorp, is in its fifth year of granting entrepreneurs the funds to grow and develop their small business in Cloud County.
A total of 35 businesses have been awarded grant monies by the county commission from the wind farm gift provided by EDP Renewables. The program continues to provide support through mentoring and access to capital.
