Mail carriers to assist with Stamp Out Hunger

The Kansas Food Bank and Cloud County Resource Center are gearing up for the annual Letter  Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive scheduled for May 11.
The largest one-day food drive held across the United States assists local food banks and pantry partners.
Mail carriers for the U.S. Postal Service see the struggles in the communities they serve, and believe that it is important to do what they can to help.
Mail carriers in Concordia will be delivering blue bags, courtesy of Hampel Oil, to mailboxes across the community.
Residents are encouraged to fill the bags with items that will be donated to the local food pantry.
Specific items requested this year include: canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter, canned beans, tuna or other canned meats and meal in one type items such as soup, stew or chili.
“As local funding becomes more and more scarce, the Cloud County Resource Center relies on the help and support of the community. And that really is the beauty of living in a small town, the desire of neighbors to help one another. I am always proud to tell people about the little town I'm from for just that reason,” Tonya Merrill, Cloud County Resource Center executive director said, “The summer is our busiest time of the year, and we hope that everyone will consider helping us to help others.”
The time of the food drive is important, with food banks and pantries running low on donations from the winter holidays. With summer approaching and kids out of school, the demand for food will increase.
The Kansas Food Bank collects and distributes donated and low-cost nutritious food to more than 700 hunger relief partners in its 85-county service area.
Last year, more than 12 million meals were distributed, helping feed nearly 215,300 different Kansans.
Hunger relief partners include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, the Food4Kids backpack program and Bob Box senior box programs. In addition, the Food Bank takes a leadership role in identifying and addressing hunger needs affecting Kansas.
