Planning begins for Concordia’s 150th

Concordia will turn 150 years old in 2021, and the Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee has been formed to begin planning for the anniversary.
The committee met for the first time on Monday.
Historical records indicate various facets of town formation between 1870 and 1872. The 75th anniversary of Concordia was celebrated in 1946, the 100th in 1971 and the 125th in 1996.
The time capsule buried during the 100th celebration is to be opened August 15, 2021. Therefore, the 150th anniversary of the organization of the city of Concordia will be celebrated in 2021.
A year-long celebration is anticipated, with monthly events showcasing prominent moments in Concordia's history.
During the first meeting of the Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee, members of the group offered several event ideas, including re-enactments, plays, a beard growing contest, weekly trivia, vintage yard games and a community church service.
A report on the committee meeting from city manager Amy Lange stated that, “Concordia is rich with good history that helped shape the community's modern character. We must remember the past so we can learn from it, and make our future even better. One of the goals of the Sesquicentennial Celebration  Committee is to educate our community about the history of Concordia, and do so in a manner enjoyable for all generations.”
Also during the initial meeting of the committee, a logo to identify and commemorate the 150th celebration on publications and merchandise was selected.
The committee will meet on the third Monday of each month at 5:15 p.m. at City Hall. The next meeting is set for February 17.
Sub-committees for event planning, marketing and publicity and fundraising were formed. Each is imperative to the successful execution of the celebration.
