Thompson selected to fill magistrate judge vacancy

TOPEKA — Regine Thompson has been selected to fill a magistrate judge vacancy in Republic County by the 12th Judicial District nominating commission.
The nominating commission conducted public interviews of nominees for the position on Thursday in Belleville.
Three people applied for the open position that was created by the resignation of District Magistrate Judge Starla Nelson.
Thompson, who is a partner in the law office of Thompson & Thompson, Scandia, will assume the new position effective on her swearing-in.
The 12th Judicial District is composed of Cloud, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Republic and Washington counties.
Kansas law requires that a district magistrate judge be: A resident of Republic County at the time of taking office and while holding office, at least 30 years old, a graduate of a high school, a secondary school or the equivalent of, and either a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or be able to pass an examination given by the Supreme Court to become certified within 18 months.
After serving one year in office, the new magistrate judge must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in the position. If retained, the incumbent will serve a four-year term.
The 12th Judicial District nominating committee consists of Supreme Court Justice Caleb Stegall as the nominating chair; Carol Good, Barnard; William Navis, Belleville; Dwight Daniels, Curtis Fraser and Jerry Harrison, Beloit; Dana Brewer and Brad Lowell, Concordia; Tanner Johnson, Courtland; Daniel Metz, Lincoln; Rick Diamond and Darrell Miller, Mankato; and Bruce Meyer, Palmer.
