Ethel Luana (Galloway) Vaughan

Ethel Luana (Galloway) Vaughan died in Norton, Kansas, at age 100, on May 25, 2020. She was born on July 23, 1919, at the family farm located two miles north of Jamestown in Cloud County, Kan.
Ethel was a teacher of 1st grade children for 47 years. She taught for 4 years in Plainville, Phillipsburg, and Horton, Kan.; 15 years in Concordia, Kan.; and 28 years in San Rafael and Corte Madera, Calif.
While during her first year of teaching in Plainville, Kan., (1939-40), Ethel and Norman W. Vaughan met. On June 5, 1957, Ethel and Norm were married in Jamestown, Kan. In 1958, Ethel joined Norm in Marin County north of San Francisco Bay. In retirement, Ethel and Norm built a home outside of Point Reyes Station, Calif., where they had ample land for a large garden with fruit and vegetables. Ethel continued working with children as a substitute teacher for 13 years. Norm passed away in March 2003 at their home in Rossmoor, a retirement community in Walnut Creek, Calif. For 10 years, Ethel volunteered in a preschool program located in the Grace Presbyterian Church. Ethel moved to Whispering Pines, Norton, Kan., in March 2013 to be closer to her sister.
Ethel has traveled internationally. In 1955 Ethel was chosen by the United Presbyterian Church in America, as one of ten to participate in a ‘work camp’ in Alexandria, Egypt. They joined other youth from Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt in this project. Before and after the month-long work camp, Ethel toured Europe in France, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Venice, Florence, Pisa, and Rome, Italy. She also explored Alexandria, Cairo, and Egyptian pyramids. Later, Ethel and Norm traveled extensively in the United States, Scotland, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Taiwan.
The Winteroth family visited Ethel and Norm many times throughout the years. A highlight for nieces, Kathleen and Suzanne, were trips to the tide pools near Bolinas, along with trips to Stinson Beach and Point Reyes National Seashore. Both nieces visited Ethel’s 1st grade classes to observe and help during their mid-year college breaks. Over time, education discussions were often held after dinner. This is a family of teachers, starting with Ethel and Doris’ mother, Doris and Ethel, Kathleen and Suzanne, Kathleen’s former husband, and her great-niece Amelia.
Ethel was predeceased by her father, Ralf Wilson Galloway, mother, Alice Luana Christensen Galloway, an infant brother, Eldon Lorraine Galloway, and her husband, Norman W. Vaughan. She is survived by her sister, Doris Lucile Galloway Winteroth (Norton); nieces, Kathleen Winteroth Hursh (Estes Park, Colo.), Suzanne Winteroth Goff (Meriden, Conn.), Carolyn O’Brien Vertucca (Concord, Calif.); and nephew, Charles O’Brien (Concord, Calif.); grand-nephews and nieces, Asa Hursh (Los Angeles, Calif.), Austin Hursh (Rochester, N.Y.), Amelia Goff Young (Meriden, Conn.), Allie Goff (Bethany, Conn.), and great-grand-nieces and nephew, Corinne Hursh (Los Angeles, Calif.), Cleo Hursh (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Bear Young (Meriden, Conn.); along with many friends throughout her life.
A service is postponed until it is safe for family and friends to gather and celebrate her life. Memorials are designated to Whispering Pines, Norton, Kan., (where Ethel lived for 7 years) or Grace Cooperative Preschool, 2100 Tice Valley Blvd, Walnut Creek, Calif. 94595 (where Ethel volunteered for several years) or to the family c/o Kathleen Hursh (Ethel’s niece), 2091 Eagle Cliff Rd., Estes Park, Colo. 80517, who will divide the donation between the two above.
