NAOMI A. (HAMMER) BARLEEN

Naomi A. (Hammer) Barleen, age 101, died Sunday, May 12, 2019, at Mt. Joseph Senior Village, Concordia, KS.  She was born Jan. 29, 1918, at their farm home north of Norway, KS, to Alfred & Esther (Ross) Hammer.  Her grandfather, Peder Hammer, also resided there during her childhood and was a very special part of her life.

 

She grew up on a farm near Norway. Naomi was a graduate of Norway High School and taught in a country school.  She married Leonard Barleen on Sept. 8, 1940, and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1974.  The couple farmed north of Concordia.

 

She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Norway and Rural Improvement Club of Concordia.

 

Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, sudoku puzzles, cooking, gardening, and most of all, spending time with her family, grandchildren, friends and a special neighbor friend, Jeanne Keazer.

 

She is survived by her sons; Arnold (Donna) Barleen, Concordia & Leland (Deanna) Barleen, Clay Center; daughters, Karen Smith, Salina & Phyllis (Fred) Larsen, Concordia; sister, Elnora Whitney, Coeur d’Alene, ID.; sister-in-law, Wilma Mikesell, Courtland, KS.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild on the way and 1 great great-grandchild on the way; several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; parents, Alfred and Esther; a son, Robert; granddaughter, Nicole Barleen; great-granddaughter, Kyra Voss & 2 sisters, Evelyn Wagor & Anita Coppage; half-brother, Clarence Hammer.

 

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2019, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Norway, with Rev. Anita Strommen officiating.  Burial will follow in the Norway Cemetery, Norway.  Visitation will be Sunday, May 19, 2019, from 1-8 pm with family greeting friends from 6-8 pm at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.  The family suggests memorials to Meadowlark Hospice or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.  For online Condolences, please visit www.chaputbuoy.com.
