A Closer Walk

A CLOSER WALK
Greg Worthen
"Make a decision. Right or wrong, make a decision. The road is paved with flat squirrels that couldn't make a decision," author unknown. On occasion life requires us to make a decision before we would like to. We might want more information or more knowledge about the situation before we make this particular decision. But sometimes the decision must be made regardless.
"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him," James 1:5 NASB. Our loving and gracious Heavenly Father promises that if we lack wisdom (who has too much of that?), and if we ask Him for wisdom, He will grant that request; and grant it generously! So for those decisions where we would prefer to have more knowledge or information, we have been granted the opportunity to ask for Godly Wisdom. By the way, we could also ask for more knowledge and information. Where would we look for such? A good place to start would be someone who has experienced the same or a similar situation. Or someone who is older and wiser.
"No decision, is a decision," author unknown. This statement is true also. An example: A man is driving his car and must cross the railroad tracks. He drives onto the tracks and just after the front wheels clear the tracks, the car quits. The man and his car are sitting in the middle of the tracks. So the man tries to restart his car as he looks both ways down the tracks for a train. One is approaching. He continues trying to restart his car as the train gets closer and closer. He must decide either to abandon his car and save himself, or to continue trying to get his car started to get it off the tracks before the train hits. No decision, is a decision. Obviously no car is worth a person's life. So the man needs to leave himself plenty of time to exit the car and get to a safe place.
“Therefore also we have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him,” 2 Corinthians 5:9 NASB. As believers we desire that whatever decision we might make be pleasing to our God. The wrong decision might take us off course and could bring about detours or roadblocks. Virtually any decision we face could be prayed about. The momentous decisions should be bathed in prayer. Like it or not, as earthly beings we lack the wisdom, knowledge, and information to make a perfect decision. So basically, our decisions sometimes amount to our best guess as to what is right for us or what is best.
My beloved and I have had success with asking our Heavenly Father to close the doors that weren't right for us. There were a couple of job opportunities for me over the years where I was all but hired over the phone. Then, for whatever reason, the door was closed. Praise the Lord! Because He made the decision for us. Sometimes what appears to be a good choice turns out to be otherwise. A man who had changed jobs and then later returned to his former employer said, “My dream job turned out to be a nightmare.” What might appear to be a good choice sometimes turns out to be otherwise.
We have as our ambition to be pleasing to our God. We prefer to walk the straight and narrow, rather than the wide way of destruction. If we make our decisions based on what appears to be the most Godly decision, the most righteous decision, or the decision that would do the most to build up the Kingdom of God, then likely most decisions we make would be good decisions. And would both honor and be pleasing to our God. Then we must trust our Lord for the rest.
