A Closer Walk

"I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up into the heavens and say there is no God," Abraham Lincoln. "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork," Psalm 19:1 KJV. Our sixteenth president must have marveled when he looked up into the heavens. It is possible that David, who wrote the 19th Psalm and who became the King of the Israelites, marveled as well. Their reactions seem to be similar.
David also says that the firmament, the earth, shows His handywork. In the Book of Genesis on each of the first five days of creation, after God had created what He created, He saw what He had made and said that it was good. All these created things, the earth and all it contains, show His handywork just as the heavens declare His glory.
On the sixth day, "Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them," Genesis 1:26-27 NASB. God created us, you and I, in His own image. We, you and I, are created in the image of God. There is nothing else on earth that can make that claim.
"And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good...", Genesis 1:31 NASB. After God created the earth and all it contains He saw what He had made and said it was good. After He created men and women He saw all He had made and said it was very good. Why would that be? Men and women (and boys and girls) are made in the image of Almighty God. There is nothing else that God has created that can say that. So God saw what He had made on the sixth day, us, and said that it was very good.
We, you and I, are the only things on earth that can disobey God. Think about it. Trees can only be trees and do tree things, like loose their leaves in the fall. Cattle can only be cattle and do cattle things, graze and make babies. Same thing with other creatures and critters. They can only do what they do. Dirt, rocks, minerals and everything else can only do what they do. We on the other hand can disobey God. And even though we are created in God's own image, sometimes we do just that. The only things created in God's own image, are the only things that can disobey Him.
But we can also, like the heavens, declare His glory. It is our choice.
