A Closer Walk

Are these troubling times? "And call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor me," Psalm 50:15 NASB. The Lord instructs us to call upon Him in the day of trouble. That sure seems to be describing the days in which we are currently living. Our God promises that if we call upon Him, He will rescue us. Then we will be able to honor Him.

When days of trouble do come our God is always available for us to call on. How can that be? Well, He doesn't sleep. “...From whence shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber,” Psalm 121:1-3 NASB. In addition to not sleeping our God offers protection even in the midst of calamity. “The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade on your right hand. The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever,” Psalm 121:5 and 7-9 NASB. And further, “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea,” Psalm 46:1-2 NASB.
So the Lord is our rescuer, our help, our guide, and He doesn't sleep. Our God is our keeper. He provides comfort (shade), and He will protect us from evil. He will keep our soul, and will guard us whether we are going out or coming in. And how long will He do these things we might ask? From this time forth and forever. The Lord God Almighty is our refuge and our strength. He is a very present help in trouble. Notice please, not simply a present help, but a very present help. Therefore, we should not be fearful, or anxious, or timid. Even if the earth should change or if the mountains would slip into the very heart of the sea.
It is helpful for us to be reminded of these things which are part of God's character during times such as this. It is equally helpful for us to be reminded of the actions the Lord promises to take on our behalf. These may be troubling times but our God, the only true and living God, is a very present help in times of trouble. He is not just a refuge, but He is our refuge. He is not just strength, but He is our strength. And He promises that if we will call upon Him He will rescue us. Amazing!
“Then Nehemiah, who was the governor...said to them, 'Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength',” Nehemiah 8:9-10 NASB.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever,” Psalm 23:1-6 KJV.
