Bulldogs shoot down short-handed Panthers

MARYSVILLE — Opening North Central Kansas League play under less then ideal circumstances, the Concordia Panthers suffered a 61-36 loss to Marysville Tuesday night.
Concordia was on the road for the league opener, and playing without two of its top offensive weapons in seniors Corben Monzon and Dyelan Reed.
Monzon missed a third consecutive game after injuring his ankle in the season opener against Beloit.
Reed, who is averaging a team best 23 points per game, did not play because of disciplinary reasons.
Concordia (1-3) was also without sophomore starter Chas Carlgren much of the first half after he picked up two fouls.
“This is a young team and we had some guys get the opportunity to get some varsity action,” Concordia coach Michael Roe said, “I thought we saw some things out of some guys that will maybe help them throughout the rest of the season.
Marysville (4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play) opened the game on fire from three-points range.
The Bulldogs connected on four of five attempts from beyond the arc in bolting to a 12-2 lead.
Marysville finished with 11 three-point makes in the contest, while Concordia missed on all nine attempts.
“We knew they were capable of shooting the ball very well. We thought we might be able to get them off a little bit with some jump defense. It didn't work, and they got hot and got confident and shot the ball very well,” Roe said.
Sophomore Wyatt Trost scored five points during a 7-0 Concordia spurt that closed the gap to 12-9 with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Trost led the Panthers with 11 points.
Marysville, with Jackson Rader tossing in five points, responded with a 9-0 run that made it a 21-9 game heading into the second period.
A basket by Owen Nietfield pushed the Bulldog's lead to 23-9.
Trost scored on a drive and Chase Parker grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to get Concordia within 10 points, 23-13 with just over six minutes to play in the first half.
The two teams would trade baskets, and Marysville got buckets by Jacob Backus and Dalton Denner to go on top 29-15.
Cav Carlgren scored on a drive and Chas Carlgren hit one of two free throws, and the Panthers were down 29-18.
Marysville, with Denner and Gavin Pieschel connecting on three-point shots, scored the final 10 points of the first half to make it a 39-19 game.
Concordia would get as close as 18 points on two occasions early in the second half.
The Panthers then scored just three points over the final 6:30 of the period.
Marysville knocked down four more threes in pouring in 16 points during that span, and led 57-27 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
With a running clock in the fourth quarter, Concordia outscored the Bulldogs 9-4.
“Even though the game got away from us, I thought we did some nice things,” Roe said.
Chas Carlgren finished with eight points for the Panthers.
Jacob Rosenbaum scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds.
Denner, who hit four threes, led three Marysville players in double figures with 16 points.
Pieschel also connected on four threes and scored 12 points.
Matthew Holle added 10 points.
Concordia will host Abilene in a league game on Friday night.
“This is a young team right now, and we just have to find some confidence,” Roe said.
