CCCC drops dual to Newman

WICHITA — Continuing a string of duals against NCAA Division II opponents, the Cloud County Community College wrestling team was beaten 37-6 by Newman University on Thursday.
Matthew Cruickshank and Benny Hernandez recorded wins for Cloud County in the dual.
“I thought we wrestled a lot better than we did against Colorado Mesa and Western State,” Cloud County coach Cody Cole said, “We had a lot of close matches throughout the lineup.”
Cruickshank got out to a 10-0 on Ivan Balavage, and held on for a 14-11 victory in the 184-pound class. He is now 3-4 on the season.
“Matt came through with a big victory for us, and we've seen leaps from him,” Cole said, “Last week he kind of struggled, but now he's starting to find some good offense on his feet.
Hernandez, ranked fourth in the NJCAA in the 285-pound class, pulled out a 3-1 victory over Thor Balavage.
“Benny continued to dominate. Even though it was a 3-1 final score, I thought he controlled the match the whole time being offensive and moving Balavage around the entire time” Cole said.
Cloud County's Blayne Harris, 125 pounds, suffered a 10-3 loss to Blake Sargent.
Blake Leiszler, a freshman from Concordia wrestling at 133 pounds, had a lead in the third period before being pinned by Newman's Tyler Lawley.
“Blake wrestled really well early, got a lot of takedowns against a tough redshirt junior. We just have to finish the match at the end there. We gave up some silly points,”
Cole said.
Bryce Gfeller lost by technical fall, 19-1, to Kevin Kissane in the 141-pound class.
Tanner McGivney, 149 pounds, was pinned by Kameron Frame.
Quentin Jiner, 157 pounds, lost by technical fall, 17-2, to Tyler Miles.
Newman's Noah Perkins got a takedown in the third period to narrowly defeat Noah Aziere in the 165-pound class.
Jayden Creach lost by fall to Nate Panagakis in the 174-pound class.
Zach Bowen, 197 pounds, suffered a 12-6 defeat to Jacob Stoneberger.
The Thunderbirds will compete in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open on Saturday.
