CCCC drops pair to Blue Devils

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Opening Jayhawk Conference Division II play on the road, the Cloud County Community College softball team suffered a pair of losses to Kansas City Kansas Community College on Saturday.
Kansas City Kansas scored 15 runs in the first two innings on its way to a 19-8 victory in the first game of the twin-bill.
The Blue Devils pulled out a 4-3 win in the second game.
“We definitely took a step in the right direction defensively,” Cloud County coach Aaron Acree said, “It got our confidence going because we were charging the ball well and the one error came on what was going to be a bang-bang play anyway. The girls are starting to realize we can do it. Once we get outside on the field to practice a little more I think we're going to be okay and able to work through this.”
Cloud County, now 1-11 overall, grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one.
KCK responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first.
Racking up eight runs in the second inning the Blue Devils opened up a 15-3 advantage.
Cloud County made it 15-7 with four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
KCK pushed across four runs in the bottom of the inning, and led 19-7.
The T-Birds added one run in the fifth.
The game ended after the top of the fifth.
Cloud County gave up 10 walks in the game.
“The umpire had a tight, tight zone in that first game,” Acree said, “It was a situation where both teams were unhappy with the zone, but we just had to play through that.”
Mikayla Bletscher had two hits in three at bats and drove in two runs.
Emily Wells had two hits in three at bats.
KCK went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning in game two.
Cloud County got producing singles by Sarah McCown and Kennedy Doherty in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.
McCown had three hits in four at bats in the game.
“She's staying back and seeing the ball very well right now,” Acree said, “She's understanding what her job is, and she hit a lot of balls back up the middle. She's executing her at-bats and staying a little more patient as well.”
The Blue Devils reclaimed the lead at 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the third inning.
Wells led off the top of the fourth inning with a walk and scored on an error to again pull the T-Birds even at 3-3.
Hannah Reddick scored on a single by Devin Purcell in the bottom of the fifth inning to put KCK on top to stay, 4-3.
Cloud County was shut out over the final three innings.
Mattison Hogrefe and Kara Chisholm had two hits each for the T-Birds.
Cloud County is back on the road to play Labette Community College in a conference doubleheader on Thursday.
