CCCC goes 2-0 in triangular

After needing four sets to get past Southeast (Neb.) Community College, the 13th-ranked Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds swept 10th-ranked Highland Community College in the second match of a volleyball triangular they hosted Friday in Bryant Gymnasium.
Cloud County, 20-5 this season, downed Southeast (3-24) 25-13 in the first set.
Southeast pulled away to a 25-16 victory in the second set to even the match at 1-1.
The T-Birds fell behind the Storm 7-4 in the third set, but battled back to post a 25-16 win.
Cloud County closed out the match by winning the fourth set, 25-17.
Freshman Emelys Martinez had 17 kills and eight digs for the T-Birds.
Freshman setter Riley Bontrager finished with 41 assists and seven digs.
Cloud County finished the first set with a 6-1 run to capture a 25-18 win against Highland (24-7).
The T-Birds cruised past the Scotties 25-15 in the second set, and led 23-0.
Cloud County completed the sweep by edging Highland 25-23 in the third set.
“Our kids were fired up tonight about playing Highland for the second time this season, and we were ready to play tonight,” Cloud County coach Deb Monzon said, “Our focus tonight was to clean up our service and hitting errors, along with ball controls and cleaning things up in all areas of our game to make our opponents earn the points they get off of us.”
Martinez led the way against Highland with 18 kills.
Mary Broxterman added 11 kills.
