CCCC goes 2-3 in Spring Classic

Splitting a pair of one-run games on Sunday, the Cloud County Community College baseball team finished 2-3 in the Cloud County Spring Classic it hosted at the Concordia Sports Complex.
Cloud County went 1-2 on Saturday.
The Thunderbirds would score a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 4-3 victory over Central (Neb.) Community College in the first game on Sunday, and then fell 7-6 to Iowa Central Community College.
Cloud County, on Saturday, lost 8-4 to Southeast (Neb.) Community College, and 6-3 to Iowa Central and then slipped past Iowa Lakes Community College, 6-5.
The T-Birds were tied at 1-1 with Central Community College heading into the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday.
Mikayla Bletscher scored on a single by Kennedy Doherty.
An error on a ground ball by Kayla Lee allowed Taylor Burks to score, and Cloud County led 3-1.
Central tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Neither team scored in the seventh, and the game went to extra innings.
Mattison Hogrefe held Central scoreless in the top of the eighth inning.
Sarah Mccown doubled to drive in Jacie Marcotte with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Hogrefe pitched all eight innings to get the win. She gave up three runs, one earned, on eight hits, struck out five and walked two.
Mccown had three hits for Cloud County.
Bletscher, Doherty and Emily Wells had two hits each.
Iowa Central jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the T-Birds in the top of the first inning on Sunday.
Lee scored on an error in the bottom of the first to make it 5-1.
A grand slam home run by Lee in the bottom of the second inning pulled Cloud County even at 5-5.
They then took a 6-5 lead when Kylie Hopkins singled to drive in Bletscher in the bottom of the third inning.
Cloud County would not score again.
Two runs in the top of the fifth inning gave Iowa Central a 7-6 cushion.
Brynn Riley took the loss for the T-Birds. She allowed seven runs, just three earned, on eight hits and walked five in five and two-thirds innings.
Hogrefe pitched an inning and a third and gave up one hit. She struck out one.
Wells, Doherty and Hopkins had two hits each.
On Saturday, Cloud County led Southeast Community College 1-0 through two innings.
The Storm scored three runs in the top of the third inning and two in the fifth to go up 5-1.
Cloud County closed the gap to 5-4 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Southeast pulled away to the 8-4 win with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Hogrefe gave up eight runs in 12 hits, struck out three and walked one in taking the loss.
Cloud County banged out 10 hits and left eight baserunners stranded.
Wells was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in.
Marcotte had two hits.
Iowa Central scored one run in the second inning, two in the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead on Cloud County on Saturday.
A sacrifice fly by Wells allowed Hogrefe to score in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Marcotte got home on an error, and the T-Birds trailed 4-2.
Two runs in the top of the seventh inning put Iowa Central up 6-2.
Doherty scored on a single by Marcotte in the bottom of the seventh.
Riley pitched all seven innings in suffering  the loss. She allowed six runs on 10 hits, struck out four and walked three.
Hogrefe had two hits.
Cloud County trailed Iowa Lakes 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning.
Marcotte singled to drive in Kara Chisholm and scored on a double by Mccown to pull the T-Birds even at 2-2.
Cloud County added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a wild pitch and an error to go up 4-2.
Iowa Lakes made it 4-3 with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
A run producing single by Chisholm in the sixth inning put the T-Birds up 5-3.
Iowa Lakes tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Lakers went scoreless in the top of the ninth.
Lee singled to drive in Doherty in the bottom of the ninth as Cloud County walked off with the win.
Delany Miller pitched five innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked three.
Hogrefe went four innings to get the win. She allowed two runs on two hits, struck out four and walked three.
Lee and Chisholm had three hits each.
Wells added two hits.
