CCCC women go wire-to-wire to defeat Colby

COLBY — The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team capped off its mini two-game road swing with a 77-61, wire-to-wire victory over Colby Community College on Wednesday.
Sophomore forward Cassidy Haufler had a banner day for the T-Birds (9-3 overall, 2-1 KJCCC) as she finished with 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
Colby (4-6 overall, 0-3 KJCCC) simply had no answer for Cloud County's 6-foot, 1-inch post as Haufler shot an efficient 9-of-14 from the floor and led the charge on the offensive glass, finishing with seven of the T-Birds' 13 offensive rebounds.
"Cassidy was outstanding and really asserted herself, especially on the boards," said Cloud County head coach, Brett Erkenbrack. "She dominated inside on both ends."
The T-Birds jumped on the Trojans from the opening tip, building a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 31-23 advantage at the break.
Colby never inched closer than six points in the second half, but continued to hang around, going into the fourth quarter trailing just 53-42.
Cloud County would break the game open in the fourth quarter, though, pushing its lead to 20 at 68-48 with 3:15 remaining on an Emmiley Hendrixson free throw. Cloud would lead by as many as 23 points en route to the 77-61 final.
"We had some good offensive possessions in a row and coupled them with good defensive possessions to push the lead from 14 to 20 and then to 23," Erkenbrack said. "We did a real nice job finishing off the game. I was pleased with how we finished the game because Colby did hang around for awhile. I think they are a much improved ballclub and a scary team."
Hendrixson, who sat out Saturday's loss to Seward County Community College recovering from a concussion, scored seven points off the bench in her return to action.
The T-Birds as a team shot 29-of-65 (45 percent) from the floor Wednesday and had three players join Haufler in double-figures.
Sophomore forward Scout Frame and freshman guard Kamryn Collins each added 14 points, while freshman point guard Chiara De Virgilio poured in 15 points.
Cloud County will look to build off Wednesday's win and close out the fall semester strong when it tips off a two-game home stand against Dodge City Community College (6 p.m. Friday) and Hutchinson Community College (6 p.m. Wednesday) before heading off to Christmas break.
"It is nice to have our last two games before Christmas break at home," Erkenbrack said. "Dodge City will be a big ballgame for us. They are another team that is much improved from last year and have had some really nice wins against quality opponents. Then, obviously, we'll have Hutch here on Wednesday. They've been picked to win the KJCCC West and we got (a win) against them at home last year. It'd certainly be nice to go into the Christmas break with a couple of big wins at home following a nice road win."
