Chevy’s hold off Warriors in first round of state tourney

The Concordia Chevrolet/Buick Chevy's advanced to the quarterfinals of the Peewee Baseball State Tournament by slipping past the Smith Center Warriors 7-5 in the opening round Monday night at the Concordia Sports Complex.
In the other first-round game, Clifton defeated Linn 7-3, the Clyde Bluejays edged Pike Valley 6-5 and Bremen knocked off Rock Hills, 15-8
The Chevy's will play the Concordia Lions in the quarterfinals at 8:30 tonight.
Clifton plays the Smith Center Chiefs at 7:00, Clyde takes on Washington at 7:00 and Bremen faces the Beloit Crush at 8:30.
Smith Center took a 1-0 lead on the Chevy's in the top of the first inning of the first-round game.
Boone Richard and Drew Sterrett scored runs in the bottom of the first to put the Chevy's on top to stay, 2-1.
Three runs in the second inning gave the Chevy's a 4-1 cushion.
Richard and Joe Berk walked and scored in the inning. Baylor Knox also scored a run.
The Warriors made it a 5-2 game with a run in the top of the third inning.
Tacking on two runs in the bottom of the third, the Chevy's led 7-2.
Carter Eakins singled and scored a run and Deekon Holbert walked and scored.
Smith Center pushed across three runs in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap to 7-5 and had the bases loaded when a strikeout ended the game.
Kale Schroeder, Knox and Richard did the pitching for the Chevy's.
Richard had two hits in the game.
Clifton scored three runs in each the second and fourth innings on its way to the win over Linn.
Linn led the game 1-0 after one inning of play.
Three runs in the second inning put Clifton up 3-1.
Linn made it a 3-2 game with one run in the third inning.
Clifton put up three runs in the fourth inning and one in the top of the fifth to make it 7-2.
Linn added one run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Clyde Bluejays scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull out the 6-5 win over Pike Valley.
Clyde led 2-0 after one inning.
Pike Valley tied the game with two runs in the top of the second inning.
Scoring one run in the bottom of the second, the Bluejays were up 3-2.
Pike Valley pushed across two runs in the top of the third inning, and led 4-3.
A run in the bottom of the third pulled Clyde even at 4-4.
Each team scored a run in the fourth inning, and the game was knotted at 5-5.
Clyde then scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
Bremen used an eight-run fifth inning to pull away from Rock Hills.
Trailing 1-0, Bremen scored three runs in the top of the second inning and four in the top of the third to go on top, 7-1.
Rock Hills picked up four runs in the bottom of the third inning and one in the fourth to pull within a run at 7-6.
Sending 12 batters to the plate, Bremen erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 15-6 game.
Rock Hills scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
