CHS duo qualifies for state tourney

ABIlENE — Recording a sixth-place finish in the regional tournament on Saturday, the Concordia High School doubles team of Ciara Kearn and Macy McMillan qualified for the Class 4A state girls' tennis tournament.
Kearn and McMillan shut out a team from Nickerson 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round of regionals.
The Concordia duo dropped the first set to a Buhler team, 6-1. They won the second set in a tiebreak 7-6.
Buhler outlasted Kearn and McMillan 11-9 in a 10-point tiebreak to decide the match.
Kearn and McMillan bounced back to defeat Bella Sims and Maggie Gillispie of Abilene, 6-4, 7-6 and advance to the match for fifth and sixth place.
Already assured of qualifying for state, Kearn and McMillan downed Michaela Martin and McKenzie Unruh 7-5 in the opening set.
Martin and Unruh evened the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set, and then won the third and deciding set, 6-1.
“We ware very proud of Ciara and Macy for qualifying for state,” Concordia coach Michael Wahlmeier said.
The state tournament will be played Friday and Saturday at T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center in Winfield.
Concordia finished fifth as a team in the regional tournament.
Arista Bombardier came within one win of advancing to state for the Panthers in singles.
Bombardier knocked off 4-6, 6-3, (10-5).
Halle Krehbiel, Hesston, defeated Bombardier, 6-2, 6-0.
Needing a win to qualify for state, Bombardier fell 6-2, 6-2 to Gracie Dawes, Hesston.
“Arista played well and got herself to the match to go to state. She came up short, but played some really good tennis,” Wahlmeier said.
Riley McMillan, also playing singles for Concordia, lost 6-0, 6-0 to Ailiyah Frederick, Buhler.
Concordia's Bethanie McCall and Nicole Turner fell 6-1, 6-1 to Martin and Unruh of Hesston in doubles play.
“Riley, Bethanie and Nicole's seeds are not representative of their season, and I am proud of the way they competed,” Wahlmeier said.
