CHS places fourth in Buhler Invitational

BUHLER — The Concordia High School girls' tennis team placed fourth in the Buhler Invitational on Thursday.
Concordia scored 11 points in the tournament.
McPherson captured the team title with 29 points. Buhler was second with 24 and Sacred Heart was third with 13.
Arista Bombardier finished sixth in number one singles for Concordia. She was beaten 8-0 by Tess Daily, Salina South, in the opening round.
Bombardier downed Erica Petit, Classical School of Wichita, 8-3 and then fell 8-4 to Alyssa Bowdin, Valley Center.
“These girls never cease to amaze me. It seems like every time we play they find ways to inspire me. Arista has been battling sickness and was definitely not feeling 100 percent. After maybe two practices in as many weeks she found a way to get a win in the second round,” Concordia coach Michael Wahlmeier said.
Bethanie McCall and Nicole Turner, playing number one doubles for the Panthers, suffered three losses. They lost 8-2 to Clay Center, 8-0 to Buhler and 8-1 to Salina South.
“Bethanie and Nicole had a rough day, but we are confident that they will work hard and be ready to get back on track next week,” Wahlmeier said.
Riley McMillan placed fourth in number two singles for Concordia. She opened with an 8-3 victory over Emma Taylor, Valley Center, and then lost 8-0 to Brittany Teufel, Buhler, and 8-1 to Kalen Putman, Salina South.
“Riley is continuing to improve and is gaining more and more experience as we progress through the season. Her first-round win was a big contribution to our point total,” Wahlmeier said.
Ciara Kearn and Teryn Tracy won two matches in tiebreaks to finish third in number two doubles for the Panthers.
Kearn and Tracy slipped past Salina South in a tiebreak, 8-7. They fell 8-3 to McPherson, and then downed Clay Center, 8-7.
“Macy (McMillan) is out for a while with illness, and Ciara asked Teryn to team up for this tournament. The girls had maybe 20 minutes of work together on Wednesday, but played some of the best tennis I have seen them play,” Wahlmeier said.
The Concordia junior varsity won a quadrangular it hosted on Thursday by scoring 22 points.
Ellsworth was second with 15 points. Chapman also scored 15 points and was third.
