CHS wrestlers capture title in Jeff Giles Memorial

MINNEAPOLIS — Four wrestlers captured individual titles in leading the Concordia High School wrestling team to a first-place finish in the Jeff Giles Memorial Tournament hosted by Minneapolis High School on Saturday.
Sajen Kemling, 113 pounds; Koby Tyler, 120 pounds; Hunter Schroeder, 182 pounds; and Dalton Owen, 285 pounds, placed first in the tournament for Concordia.
The Panthers scored 158 points in their first event of the season. Republic County was second as a team with 128 points and Minneapolis was third with 103.
Kemling went 2-0 on his way to placing first. He pinned Josiah Knoll, Minneapolis, in 1:16 and won a 2-1 decision over AJ Polansky, Republic County.
Tyler won all four of his matches by fall in finishing first. He pinned Logan Normandin, Plainville, in 56 seconds; pinned Sheamus Holmes, Thomas More Prep-Marian, in 59 seconds; pinned Gage Carlson, Minneapolis, in 1:37; and pinned Alex Dyke, Republic County, in 29 seconds.
Schroeder pinned all five of his opponents in claiming a first-place finish. He pinned Nathan Weller, Southeast of Saline, in 16 seconds; pinned Lance Kaser, Osborne, in 34 seconds; pinned Kameron Ines, Republic County, in 39 seconds; pinned Chasyn Vogan, Minneapolis, in 1:44; and pinned Kyle Werner, Plainville, in the third period.
Owen recorded four pins in placing first. He pinned David Snider, Minneapolis, in 33 seconds; pinned Cameron DeCouteau, Ellsworth, in 43 seconds; pinned Mason Hogan, Plainville, in 50 seconds; and pinned Eli Jackson, Southeast of Saline, in 1:03.
Concordia had Logan Leiszler, 106 pounds; Daniel Vines, 126 pounds; Cody Trost, 132 pounds; and Nathan Brown, 160 pounds, place second in the tournament.
Leiszler won a 6-1 decision over Chase Johnson, Minneapolis, and a 13-0 major decision over Cohen Kaiser, Plainville. He lost by fall to Teagon Nienke, Ellsworth.
Vines pinned Antonio Grant, Plainville, in 39 seconds and Braydon Binder, Thomas More Prep, in 27 seconds. He dropped a 14-10 decision to Kaleb Talkington, Republic County.
Trost pinned Corbin Urbanek, Ellsworth, in 1:29 and pinned Jordan Williams, Republic County, in 1:17. He was pinned by Adam Reed, Minneapolis.
Brown went 4-1 in placing second. He pinned Brad Vopat, Minneapolis; pinned Noah Carrazco, Ell-Saline, in 1:35; pinned Robert Mckain, Minneapolis, in 13 seconds; pinned Tathen Lovewell, Thomas More Prep, in 1:37; and then suffered a 2-0 loss to Andrew Hubert, Republic County.
Concordia got third-place finishes by Toby Wahlmeier, 138 pounds; Easton Swihart, 145 pounds; and Keyan Miller, 170 pounds.
Wahlmeier pinned Riley Bohl, Minneapolis, in 1:49. He lost by fall to Gabe Kearns, Plainville, and lost by fall to Jonathan Dyke, Republic County.
Swihart went 3-2 in the tournament. He pinned Trent Hays, Ellsworth, in 52 seconds; pinned Dez Green, Minneapolis; pinned Justin Widler, Osborne; lost by fall to Gunnar Couture, Republic County, and lost by fall to Slade Johnson, Southeast of Saline.
Miller also finished up 3-2. He pinned Brody Murk, Minneapolis; pinned Ryan Beavers, Republic County; pinned Chris Heise, Osborne; lost 4-3 to Ben Hansen, Plainville; and lost by fall to Matthew Rodriguez, Southeast of Saline.
Chayton Alquist-Pennell finished 1-3 in the 195-pound class for Concordia.
Caleb Hanson, 152 pounds, was 0-4 and Jace Tholstrup, 220 pounds, finished 0-3.
Concordia is scheduled to host Marysville in a North Central Kansas League dual on Thursday.
