Cloud County drops dual to Western State

GUNNISON — Squaring off against a second NCAA Division II team in two days, the Cloud County Community College wrestling team was beaten 50-3 by ninth-ranked Western State Colorado University on Friday.
Bryce Gfeller, wrestling at 149 pounds, picked up the lone win for Cloud County by narrowly defeating Diego Calderon, 10-9.
“Bryce wrestled up a weight class again for us and did a really nice job,” Cloud County coach Cody Cole said, “He opened up more, had better offense and did a good job of finishing of that match against a tough NCAA Division II opponent.”
Cloud County's Blayne Harris host by technical fall, 17-2 to Trent Platt in the 125-pound class.
Blake Leiszler, a freshman from Concordia, was pinned by Cody Fatzinger in the 141-pound class.
Tyren Castonguay, 141 pounds, was beaten 12-0 by Jason Hanenberg.
Quentin Jiner lost by fall to Jason Slaughter in the 157-pound class.
Noah Aziere, 165 pounds, lost by technical fall to Hunter Mullin.
Kobryn Mann was pinned by number one ranked Brandon Supernaw.
Matthew Cruickshank lost by fall to Ruger Wyneken.
Zach Bowen, 197 pounds, was pinned by second-ranked Konnor Schmidt.
Benny Hernandez was pinned by Sammy Desriere in the 285-pound class.
“I don't think the score is really indicative of what happened,” Cole said, “I think our guys battled really well and at a different level than we were last night (against Colorado Mesa). We faced a lot better team overall, and I thought we stood our ground.”
The Thunderbirds will wrestle a dual against Newman University in Wichita on Thursday.
