Concordia comes up short against Phillipsburg, 56-54

A shot to give the Concordia Panthers a second consecutive win over a ranked team bounced off the rim as time expired.
Concordia trailed Phillipsburg, ranked fourth in Class 3A, 56-54 when Trey Sides missed the second of two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining in the game.
Hauling down the defensive rebound, Concordia raced the ball up the floor and sophomore Wyatt Trost got an open look at a three-point shot that would have given the Panthers the win.
The shot bounced off the rim, and Phillipsburg held on for the 56-54 victory.
“It was a good look,” Concordia coach Michael Roe said of the last shot, “You have got a young kid trying to win a basketball game. He got a good look and it just didn't fall.”
Concordia was coming off a North Central Kansas League win over a Chapman team ranked eighth in Class 4A, and led Phillipsburg by 10 points in the first half.
Phillipsburg would battle back to seven point lead late in the fourth quarter.
Concordia mounted a late charge that came up just short.
“Looking at where we were at the beginning of the year to where we are right now, we are playing way better basketball,” Concordia coach Michael Roe said.
Concordia had won two straight games before suffering the loss to Phillipsburg, and is now 6-12 on the season.
Phillipsburg (16-2) took its biggest lead of the game, 54-47, when Sides made a layup with 2:05 remaining in the game.
Following a timeout by Concordia, junior Ivon Owen knocked down his second three-point basket of the season to close the gap to 54-50.
“Not even close,” Roe said about whether or not that was the play that was drawn up during the timeout, “But we have preached all year that somebody else has to step up. Ivon hit the three in the Riley County game and kind of had the same shot. It is good for us, and we are glad it happened.”
Concordia was able to come up with a defensive stop, and Chas Carlgren grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to cut the deficit to two points, 54-52.
Nathan Moon made one of two free throws with 32 seconds on the clock to give Phillipsburg a 55-52 lead.
Senior Dylan Reed missed a three-point attempt, and Concordia fouled Ty Sides with 15.7 seconds remaining.
Sides missed both attempts, and Phillipsburg intentionally fouled Reed with 9.6 seconds left.
Reed, who was five of five from the line in scoring 17 points, made both free throws to pull Concordia within a point, 55-54.
Trey Sides was fouled, and he made the first free throw but missed the second.
Trost got off a potential game winning three that didn't fall.
“We had our chances, we just didn't finish it,” Roe said.
Senior Corben Monzon led Concordia with 18 points.
Carlgren, a sophomore, added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Reed grabbed nine rebounds.
Trey Sides scored 19 points for Philllipsburg.
Ty Sides finished with 12 points and Austin Miller scored 10.
The game was tied at 9-9 in the first quarter when a three-point shot by Carlgren started a 10-0 Concordia run.
Monzon made a three as time ran out in the first quarter to give Concordia a 19-9 lead.
Concordia would score just five points the first 5:23 of the second period, and Phillipsburg battled back to within three points, 24-21.
“Missed shots,” Roe said of the offensive lull, “I thought we were taking open shots. I didn't think our shot selection really changed a lot, we just missed them.”
Reed made a three to give Concordia a 27-21 cushion.
A basket by Trey Sides left Phillipsburg trailing 27-23 at halftime.
Concordia was up 35-31 in the third quarter when Phillipsburg went on an 8-0 run to go on top 39-35.
Trailing 41-35 early in the final period, Concordia would close the gap to 43-42.
Phillipsburg extended the lead to seven points, 54-47, before Concordia made one final push that came up just short.
Concordia has two league games remaining to finish up the regular season. It hosts Wamego on Friday night and Clay Center next Tuesday night.
