Cowley hands CCCC first loss of season

ARKANSAS CITY — Two ranked teams had to work a little overtime before 11th-ranked Cowley College was able to edge the 13th-ranked Cloud County Community College volleyball team in five sets Wednesday night in W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The loss was the first of the season for Cloud County, which is now 10-1 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk Conference East Division.
Cowley improves to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Tigers squeezed out a 27-25 win over Cloud County in the opening set.
Cloud County dropped the second set, 25-14.
The Thunderbirds made it 2-1 with a 25-20 victory in the third set.
Pulling out a 25-22 win in the fourth set, Cloud County evened the match at two sets apiece.
The T-Birds got out to an early lead in the fifth, only to have the Tigers rally to tie it.
The two teams were knotted at 16-16 when Cowley was able to score consecutive points to finish off the victory.
Sophomore Dayana Chara racked up 25 kills and 15 digs for Cloud County.
Freshman Emelys Martinez also reached double figures in kills with 18 and digs with 21.
Riley Bontrager, a freshman setter, finished with 56 assists and 13 digs.
The T-Birds will host the Bethany College junior varsity and Hesston College in a triangular on Friday.
