Donovan places fourth in South Invitational

SALINA — Sophomore Abby Donovan placed fourth individually to lead the Concordia High School girls' golf team to a fifth-place finish in the Salina South Invitational Monday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Donovan followed up a 44 on the front nine with a 42 on the back nine to post an 86.
“Abby had a great day today as she matched her summer KJGA score of 86. She showed a lot of power off the box and made some good decisions with course management,” Concordia coach Gene Rundus said.
Concordia finished with a team score of 403.
Maize won the tournament with a 366. Manhattan was second with a 371 and Hays was third with a 393.
Senior Michaela Wetter had rounds of 49-48 to finish with a 97 for Concordia.
“Michaela had a nice bounce back from a rough day in Hesston,” Rundus said.
Maddie Blochlinger, a senior,  shot a 104 for the Panthers with rounds of 47-57.
“Maddie continues to improve. Her 47 on the front nine was a big confidence booster,” Rundus said.
Senior Sreya Kemling rounded out the top five for Concordia with 56-60 for a 116.
Panther senior Katie Donovan shot a 91, and would have placed eighth individually, but was disqualified.
Concordia would have placed third as a team had it been able to use Donovan's score.
“We were very disappointed that we couldn't use Katie's score today. Due to a fundamental issue with the way the regular season scorecards are collected, she inadvertently signed for an incorrect score,” Rundus said, “She had the correct score on her card, and the girls read and verified their scores hole by hole. However, the girl whose card was signed by all of the players had a three instead of a five that Katie recorded for herself on hole number two. It was frustrating, but we will learn from the situation and move on.”
Emma Johnson, Derby, was the individual medalist in the tournament with a 78.
In the junior varsity tournament played on the par three course at Salina Municipal, Concordia's Shea Trecek was the individual medalist with a 50.
Haley Lewis shot a 55 to place third for the Panthers.
