Donovan sisters medal at Class 4A state tournament

HUTCHINSON — It was a sister act for the Concordia High School girls' golf team at the Class 4A state tournament Tuesday at Carey Park Golf Course.
Katie Donovan and Abby Donovan each shot 93 to finish in a three-way tie for 19th place, and earn a state medal.
It was the first state medal for senior Katie Donovan.
Abby Donovan, a sophomore, finished in a tie for 17th place last year.
Concordia, qualifying for state as a team for the first time since 2011, posted a 408 and finished 11th.
Topeka Hayden won a second straight team title with a 331. Andale finished second with a 344 and Chanute was third with a 381.
Katie Donovan posted rounds of 47-46 on the par 71 course.
Abby Donovan shot 42 on the front nine, and then 53 on the back.
“Abby had a great front nine, but ran into trouble toward the end of her second nine,” Concordia coach Gene Rundus said, “Katie was consistent all day, and as fate would have it they tied and medalled. Everyone would have liked to have shot better today, but having the sisters tie seemed fitting.”
Katie and Abby tied for 19th place with Sarah Holaday, Holton.
Senior Sreya Kemling and sophomore Shea Trecek each shot 111 to round out the top four for Concordia.
“Sryea and Shea were solid today. In fact, Shea shot her personal best. Not a bad way to end the season,” Rundus said.
Senior Michaela Wetter posted a 114 for the Panthers, and junior Maddie Blochlinger shot 123.
“We didn't accomplish all of our goals this year, but we had either the team or an individual medalist in every tournament we were in, and I was proud to take a full team to state to keep our streak of appearances rolling,” Rundus said.
It was the 15th consecutive year Concordia has had at least one state qualifier.
Hanna Hawks, Wichita Trinity Academy fired three-under-par 68 to earn medalist honors at state.
“All our our girls had a great experience throughout the weekend, and we would like to thank principal Keiswetter, our CHS cheerleaders, the football team and their coaches and all of the parents who saw us off in the morning. It was very special to know that so many people were behind us.
