Donovan wins tourney, CHS places third
WAMEGO — Posting the best nine-hole score of her career, Concordia High School junior Abby Donovan easily won the Wamego Invitational girls' golf tournament Thursday at Wamego Country Club.
Donovan turned in a round of even par 36 to capture the individual title by 10 strokes. Morgan Bruvsen, Tonganoxie, and Gracyn Nutsch, Wamego, each shot 46 to tie for second place.
“Abby had great control of her driver, made some good chips. She sank a long putt on number 8 and had a nice two-putt part on nine to cap off a day where she posted even par,” Concordia Gene Rundus said.
Concordia finished with a team score of 204 and tied for second with Tonganoxie.
The Panthers were beaten in the tiebreaker based on the fifth score, and placed third.
Wamego won the tournament with a 195.
“The girls had fun and played pretty loose today,” Rundus said, “I thought we had some moments on Tuesday at the Muni (Salina Municipal), but we were a little out of sorts. Today's performance at Wamego showed me that we can bounce back. Sure we need more positive consistency, but I really like how we responded after only a day's rest. I wish we could have earned the second-place medal outright and not finished third on a tiebreaker, but we were only a few strokes off Wamego's 195 on their home course and we played neck and neck with a good group of girls from Tonganoxie.”
Concordia junior Haley Lewis shot a personal best 54.
Junior Shea Trecek finished with a 56 for the Panthers, and sophomore McKenzie Widen shot a personal best 56 to round out the top four.
Concordia had senior Maddie Blochlinger and sophomore Bethany Trost each shoot 61.
Wamego 195, Tonganoxie 204, Concordia 204, Council Grove 224, Ottawa 239, Rossville 254, Clay Center 258.
