Panthers’ season ends with sub-state loss to Hoisington

HOISINGTON — The Concordia Panthers' season came to an end with a 66-24 loss to hot-shooting Hoisington in the opening round of the Class 3A sub-state basketball tournament Monday night.
Leading 14-9 late in the first quarter, Hoisington connected on five consecutive three-point shots during a 26-0 blitz that put the game out of reach at 43-9.
The Cardinals scored the first 11 points of the second half to go up 54-9 on their way to the win.
Concordia finished up the season 4-17.
Second-seeded Hoisington (17-4) advances to the tournament semifinals, and will play third-seeded Thomas More Prep-Marian (16-4) at 6 p.m. Thursday in Beloit.
Thomas More Prep defeated Phillipsburg, 42-38.
Top-seeded Beloit downed eighth-seeded Russell 73-37 and fifth-seeded Norton got past fourth-seeded Minneapolis, 55-49.
Those two teams will meet in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Beloit.
The championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to the 3A state tournament to be played next week in Hutchinson.
Hoisington jumped out to a 14-4 lead on Concordia in the opening 5:17 of the game.
A three-point basket by Nick Vignery and a follow by Tyler Hobrock pulled the Panthers within five points,14-9.
Bralen Thompson, who scored seven of his 10 points in the first quarter, knocked down a three-point shot late in the first quarter to give Hoisington a 17-9 advantage.
Hoisington, which connected on seven of its first nine three-point attempts in the game, and finished 9 of 17 for 53 percent, drained four threes to open in the second period.
Holt Hanzlick completed a three-point play, and the Cardinals led 32-9 midway through the quarter.
Unable to knock down a shot from the field, and turning the ball over seven times, the Panthers went scoreless in the period.
Hoisington tacked on 11 more points to extend the lead to 43-9.
The Cardinals tossed in 11 straight points in the opening 3:30 of the second half to make it a 54-9 game.
Concordia went better than 12 minutes without scoring before Chas Carlgren knocked down two free throws with 4:24 to play in the third quarter.
The Panthers trailed 58-17 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
With a running clock in the fourth quarter, Hoisington scored eight points to seven for Concordia.
Hobrock came off the bench to score six points and grab eight rebounds for the Panthers.
Reserve guard Nick Vignery finished with five points.
The Concordia starters were limited to 10 points in the game.
Hoisington had 11 players score in the game, led by Drew Nicholson with 21 points.
