Panthers win tournament title

MINNEAPOLIS — Jordan Anguish and Keyan Miller earned individual titles and led the Concordia High School wrestling team to a first-place finish in the Jeff Giles Memorial Invitational tournament hosted by Minneapolis High School on Saturday.
Anguish went 4-0 on his way to placing first in the 113-pound class.
Miller won five straight matches in finishing first in the 170-pound class.
Concordia had nine wrestlers place in the top four in their respective weight classes, and scored 169 points to win the team title. Republic County finished second with 151.1 points.
Anguish, now 9-1 this season, received a bye in the opening round. He pinned Logan Normandin, Plainville, in 1:01 and pinned Jamison Richie, Minneapolis, in the third period.
Advancing into the championship bracket, Anguish pinned Caden Adkins, Eureka, in 53 seconds. He won a 10-2 major decision over Jonathan Dyke, Republic County, in the title match.
Miller (9-1) pinned Chris Heise, Osborne, in the second period in the opening round. He won by injury default over Samuel Butler, Blue Valley Southwest, and defeated Kyle Wener, Plainville, 8-4.
In the semifinals Miller pinned Weston Pfeifer, Thomas More Prep-Marian, in 1:14.
Miller pinned Garrison Spoonts, Eureka, in the championship match.
Concordia had Sajen Kemling, 105 pounds; Koby Tyler, 120 pounds; and Daniel Vines, 126 pounds, place second.
Kemling (8-2) pinned Karter Moore, Blue Valley Southwest, in 47 seconds; pinned Teagon Nienke, Ellsworth in 50 seconds; and pinned AJ Polansky, Republic County, in 1:06 to advance to the semifinals. He defeated Gage Carlson, Minneapolis, by technical fall, 18-3.
Unbeaten Connor Hughes, Eureka, pinned Kemling in the finals.
Tyler pinned Stephan Baldwain, Russell, in 6:00; pinned Sheamus Holmes, in 1:08 and pinned Mack Shepherd, Eureka, in 3:15. He lost by technical fall, 18-2, to Wyatt Wright, Whitewater-Remington, and the pinned Lance Litchenwalter, Minneapolis, in 11 seconds.
Vines (8-2) went 4-1 in the tournament. He lost his first match 8-2 to Kaleb Talkington, Republic County and then won a 12-4 major decision over Luke Richardson, Blue Valley Southwest; pinned Kooper Hudsonpillar, in 1:47; pinned Grayson Graber, Whitewater-Remington, in 48 seconds; and pinned Adam Reed, Minneapolis, in 33 seconds.
Nathan Brown, 152 pounds, and Shelby Giersch, 220 pounds, placed third for Concordia.
Brown (6-4) went 2-1 in his pool. He pinned Kyler Welling, Chapman, in 4:41; pinned Zachary Meis, Thomas More Prep, in 1:32; and lost by fall to Owen Thiel, Whitewater-Remington.
Moving into the semifinals, Brown lost by fall to Brennan Lowe, Eureka. He pinned Brian Baxter, Republic County, in the third-place match.
Giersch (5-5) went 3-2 in his five matches. He lost by technical fall, 17-0, to Zachery Ferris, Chapman; pinned Wyatt Ruest, Eureka, in 51 seconds; lost by fall to Brendan Tripp, Ellsworth; won in sudden victory, 9-7, over Christian Ostrom, Plainville; and pinned Zach Hofen, Blue Valley Southwest, in 24 seconds.
Toby Wahlmeier, 132 pounds, and Dalton Owen, 285 pounds, placed fourth for Concordia.
Wahlmeier (5-4) received a bye. He pinned Matthew Vahling, Thomas More Prep, in 28 seconds and Brice Sasser, Republic County, in 1:01 to advance to the semifinals.
Sheridan Graber, Whitewater-Reminington, pinned Wahlmeier. He then lost by fall to Sasser in the third-place match.
Owen (4-5) pinned Max Self, Russell, in 2:21 and pinned Colt Sell, Chapman, in 1:52. He lost by technical fall to Tyler Walford, Ellsworth.
Eyann Zimmerman, Republic County, pinned Owen in the semifinals.
Owen lost by fall to Noah Hopkins, Ell-Saline, in the third-place match.
Layton Kindel, 160 pounds, went 2-3 in the tournament for Concordia.
Robert Trost finished 1-4 in the 182-pound class.
Anthony Bieker, 195 pounds was 3-2.
Eastan Hake went 2-2 in the 145-pound class.
Concordia is at Marysville for a North Central Kansas League dual on Tuesday.
