Panthers wrap up play at 3A state

EMPORIA — A Class 3A state golf tournament that started on Monday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course was completed on Wednesday.
The tournament was halted on Monday because of heavy rain.
Concordia High School had senior Paul Rundus and freshmen Hayden Dvorak and Braxton Kindel competing in the tournament.
Rundus had completed 12 holes when the tournament was called on Monday. He had to withdraw because of an unavoidable scheduling conflict when it was rescheduled for Wednesday.
“Paul was disappointed that he couldn't finish. He started on off decent, but struggled during much of Monday,” Concordia coach Gene Rundus said.
Dvorak shot a 47 on the front nine and a 41 on the back to post an 88. He finished in a three-way tie for 33rd place.
“I know that Hayden wishes he could have back some of the putts that just missed, but he was solid throughout the tournament and even notched a birdie,” Rundus said.
Kindel had rounds of 52-48 and finished in a tie for 71st place with a 100.
“Braxton drove the ball well and had a lot more confidence on our second day,” Rundus said, “I thought the guys hung in there pretty well for the most part. We are young and it showed at times, but this whole situation was a great experience for everyone. Hopefully, the freshmen will be able to get back to state again, and when they do it will be a two-day affair. So this was kind of like a mini two-day tournament.”
David Pierson was the individual medalist in the tournament with a 76.
Sabetha defended its 3A team title with a score of 327. Caney Valley was second with a 336 and Hesston was third with a 339.
