T-Birds topple Mavericks

Needing a win to keep their hopes of winning a third consecutive Jayhawk Conference West Division championship alive, the Cloud County Thunderbirds dropped Northwest Kansas Technical College 4-1 in men's soccer play Saturday afternoon at Harold M. Clark Stadium.
The fifth straight wins moved the Thunderbirds to 11-4 overall and 10-1 in the Jayhawk West.
Cloud County leads the conference with 30 points heading into the regular season finale at Barton Community College on Wednesday.
Barton, 13-1-1 overall, is 9-0-1 in the conference and has a game remaining against Northwest Tech.
The Cougars dealt the T-Birds their lone conference loss, 2-1, earlier this season.
Cloud County scored first against Northwest Tech on a goal by Matheus de Sousa, off an assist from Manuel Maquez, in the 21st minute.
The Mavericks would pull even at 1-1 when Eli Ortega scored in the 25th minute.
Jackson Brown knocked in a corner kick by Jean-Pierre Dasylva in the 38th minute to put Cloud Count on top to stay, 2-1.
The T-Birds would tack on two goals in the second half to put the match out of reach.
Caio Faro scored his sixth goal of the season in the 53rd minute. Brown picked up the assist.
In the 60th minute, Dasylva took a crossing pass from Leonardo Santiago and knocked in his team leading 10th goal of the season.
Charles Albuquerque had five saves for the T-Birds.
