Unbeaten Oilers run past Panthers

CLAFLIN — Undefeated Central Plains used smothering defense and high octane offense to post its 127th consecutive victory by overwhelming the Concordia Panthers 79-8 on Saturday afternoon.
Central Plains, ranked first in Class 1A, improved to 16-0 on the season.
The Oilers have not suffered a loss since falling to Ellinwood back in February of 2015. They have won six consecutive state championships.
Central Plains’ closest game this season was a 57-37 win over Phillipsburg.
The Oilers are scoring 75 points per contest, and are giving up just 19.5.
Concordia, which fell to 2-12 on the season, struggled from the outset against the Central Plains pressure defense.
The Panthers committed seven turnovers before getting off its first field goal attempts.
Central Plains forced Concordia into 17 turnovers in the first quarter in building a 29-0 lead.
Concordia got off just two shot attempts in the opening eight minutes.
“I was impressed. They didn't give us anything,” Concordia coach Michael Wahlmeier said, “The way we are struggling to take care of the basketball we knew that was going to be an issue. It isn't something you can simulate in practice.”
Scoring 24 points in the first 6:30 of the second period, the Oilers led 53-0.
Two free throws by Kendall Reynolds with 1:05 to play in the first half were the first points of the game for Concordia.
Reynolds knocked down the Panthers’ first field goal with 40 seconds on the clock, and they trailed 55-4 at halftime.
Senior Emily Ryan, who has signed with Iowa State University, scored 23 of her game high 29 points in the first half. She is averaging 30 points per game.
Central Plains scored the first four points of the second half to make it 59-4.
Terin Rundus knocked down a long jumper for Concordia.
The Panthers would go the final five minutes of the third quarter without scoring, and trailed 74-6.
With a running clock in the final period, the Oilers outscored Concordia 5-2.
“They are the best team I have ever seen,” Wahlmeier said.
Reynolds scored half of Concordia's eight points.
Kassidy Nixon scored 14 points for Central Plains. Addison Crites added 12 points.
Concordia will host unbeaten Riley County on Tuesday night.
